CLEMSON, S.C. – No. 14 Duke claimed gold in the Second Varsity Four and the Blue Devils finished third in the team standings as competition at the ACC Rowing Championship wrapped up Saturday at Lake Hartwell.
With a winning time of 7:11.587, the 2V4 earned the second gold medal in program history after the Varsity Four did so in 2019. Coxed by freshman
Audrey Kline, the crew of
Rivca Chaver (stroke),
Sydney Cikovic,
Shae Simpson and
Noelle Fuchs shot out to a narrow lead at the halfway point and then pulled away in the final 1,000 meters, beating out Virginia by 4.5 seconds.
Duke placed second in the Varsity Four and Third Varsity Eight while taking third in the Varsity Eight and Second Varsity Eight to log a total of 82 points, good for third in the team standings behind champion Virginia (98) and Syracuse (83). Clemson (60), Miami (52), Louisville (43), Notre Dame (29), Boston College (26) and North Carolina (21) rounded out the team standings.
"I'm proud of our entire team and everyone's effort," said head coach
Megan Cooke Carcagno. "It's not every day you get to make program history and win in an ACC event. Overall, I'm very happy every member of our team is returning to Durham with a medal around their neck. There's a lot to be said about the speed of the ACC and continuing to find the podium is incredibly exciting and worth the hard work. We thank Clemson for hosting and congratulate the champions, Virginia."
The Blue Devils came away with an ACC bronze medal for the 10th time in program history.
Duke's 3V8 started the day with a silver-medal performance, narrowly falling behind to UVA (6:39.820 to 6:45.170). The two sides were separated by less than a second at the first 500-meter mark, but the Cavaliers were able to make a late push to gain separation. After the 2V4's golden race, the top-seeded V4 looked to follow up with another win to break a tie atop the team standings. Duke trailed by just one second three-quarters of the way down the course, but UVA once again staved off the Blue Devils and earned the victory.
The 2V8 and V8 Grand Finals to close the morning each saw Syracuse take the runner-up spot ahead of Duke. The Blue Devils posted a time of 6:31.047 in the 2V8, just under three seconds short of the Orange, before the Duke V8 crossed the finish line at 6:29.505, four seconds shy of silver.
The Blue Devils netted two All-ACC selections from the V8 crew, as senior
Sydney Johnson was named to the second team while junior
Megan Lee earned first-team honors. Johnson picked up All-ACC distinction for the second consecutive year, as the Hamilton, New Zealand native was a member of the first team in 2021. Lee, a 2021 CRCA/Pocock All-American, received All-ACC recognition for the first time.
Duke now turns its attention to the 2022 NCAA Rowing Championship selection show on Tuesday, May 17 at 7:30 p.m. ET. The event will be streamed live on NCAA.com.
