PITTSBURGH, Pa. – No. 9 Duke softball (41-8, 19-3 ACC) battled through a wild back-and-forth affair, but fell to No. 3 Florida State, 8-6, in the ACC Championship semifinals on Friday night at Vartabedian Field on the campus of Pittsburgh.
The Blue Devils were able to rally from an early five run deficit, thanks to six runs and nine hits in the game.
Jala Wright helped keep the Blue Devils in the game in relief, throwing five innings and striking out eight.
The Seminoles took a 5-0 lead in the second inning, behind two home runs from Chloe Culp and Kalei Harding. However, the Blue Devils would not go quietly, as they scored their first run on an
Ana Gold double in the bottom of the second inning to make it 5-1.
The bottom of the fourth inning expedited the rally, as the Blue Devils led off with a home run from
Rachel Crabtree to make it 5-2. Duke kept the pressure on the Seminoles, as they added another runner on base, before
Francesca Frelick launched her second consecutive home run to score two and make it 5-4, knocking Seminoles starting pitcher Danielle Watson out of the game.
After another scoreless frame from Wright, the Blue Devils jumped ahead in the fifth inning.
Jameson Kavel singled and stole second, before
Deja Davis added another single. After new Seminoles pitcher Kathryn Sandercock intentionally walked
Kristina Foreman,
Caroline Jacobsen made her pay. The Tallahassee, Fla., native laced a single up the middle, scoring two to give Duke a 6-5 lead.
However, the Seminoles were able to secure three runs in the sixth inning, on a Kaley Mudge single and Sydney Sherrill, double to take an 8-6 lead.
Gisele Tapia attempted another rally for the Blue Devils, with a double in the sixth, but the Blue Devils were unable to score from there.
The Blue Devils will now await their fate for the NCAA Championship, as the NCAA Softball Championship Selection Show will take place on Sunday, May 15 at 7 p.m., on ESPN2. The NCAA Regionals are scheduled to take place from May 20-22 at campus sites.
Notes:
- With her fourth inning home run, Crabtree recorded her 200th collegiate hit, joining Kavel as the only Blue Devils to reach the threshold.
- Crabtree also reached the 10 home run threshold, giving the Blue Devils four 10-home run hitters on the season.
- Frelick now has four home runs in her last six games played.
