DURHAM – Four different Blue Devils recorded hat tricks, but a late push by No. 10 Duke came up short in a 16-15 setback to No. 16 Notre Dame in ACC men's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon at Koskinen Stadium.
Duke falls to 9-5 overall and 1-2 against ACC foes, while Notre Dame moves to 4-4 and 2-1 in conference play.
Rookies
Reed Landin and
Andrew McAdorey and
Nakeie Montgomery and
Brennan O'Neill all had three goals apiece. It was the first career hat trick for Landin as he finished with a career-high four points. O'Neill and Montgomery led the Blue Devils with five points overall.
The Irish led for the entire 60 minutes with Duke pulling within one three times. The Blue Devils scored three of the game's final four goals, including a strike from O'Neill with eight seconds left to give Duke one final chance to force overtime. However, like it did all afternoon Notre Dame came up with a timely play with a win on the ensuing faceoff to secure the road victory.
Notre Dame jumped all over the Blue Devils in the first quarter, taking a 7-3 lead after 15 minutes. The Fighting Irish scored the first two goals before
Nakeie Montgomery made it a 2-1 game with the first of his three markers. It was all Irish after that as they outscored Duke, 5-2, over the next 10 minutes. Notre Dame scored seven goals on only nine shots in the opening quarter.
The Blue Devils shifted momentum in Duke's favor in the second quarter with sophomore
Brennan O'Neill and rookie
Reed Landin scoring the first two goals to make it a 7-5 game. After Notre Dame went back in front three, 8-5, Duke answered with two goals in 17 seconds to make it a one-goal contest with 5:44 remaining in the half.
Notre Dame, once again, had an answer and notched three of the final four goals of the quarter for an 11-8 lead at the break. The Irish had seven different goal scorers in the first half.
The Blue Devils buckled down on defense in the second half, holding Notre Dame to just five goals and forcing 10 turnovers. However, Duke was unable to capitalize enough times as the Irish held onto their first-half lead.
Trailing by four after a Jake Taylor goal for the Irish, Duke scored three unanswered to pull within one for a second time. McAdorey, Landin and
Owen Caputo scored for Duke in a span of 5:32, leaving Duke just one possession away from a tie game.
After being held scoreless for 10 minutes, Notre Dame scored a man-up goal to shift momentum back in its favor with 10 seconds left in the quarter. The final period proved to be much of the same as Notre Dame went up three with 5:41 remaining and held off the final charge from the Blue Devils.
Pat Kavanagh led all scorers with three goals and four assists, while Taylor had four points. Notre Dame had nine different goal scorers. Liam Entenmann made 11 saves for the Irish, while Will Lynch had a solid afternoon at the faceoff dot in winning 19-of-35 and picking up 11 ground balls and scoring a goal and an assist.
Jake Naso was 16-of-35 in restarts for Duke and added a goal and an assist, while
Will Frisoli forced three turnovers and collected two ground balls.
Mike Adler had five saves.
Duke has a quick turnaround as it hosts No. 7 Virginia at Koskinen Stadium. Faceoff is set for 6 p.m., on ACC Network.
