Alaina McVeigh and
Abby Spear have been selected as nominees for the USA Today Field Hockey National Player of the Year the organization announced Wednesday. Duke's trio is among the 24 high school field hockey players nominated for the award.
The USA Today High School Sports Awards annually honors the high school national player of the year in 28 different sports. These nominees will be honored, and each winner announced, July 31 during an on-demand broadcast, which this year will feature top high school athletes in 29 boys and girls sports awards categories as well as special honors like Team of the Year, Special Olympics Athlete of the Year, Rising Star and Play of the Year.Β
An NFHCA first team All-American this past season, Bitting is a four-year letterwinner for Linda Kreiser at Lower Dauphin High School. She was a leader for the Lower Dauphin team that won the 2021 Keystone Division title and advanced to the District 3 championship. Playing both midfield and back, Bitting recorded double digit goals and assists as a senior en route to garnering all-state first team and
NFHCA all-region honors. Bitting was in integral in Lower Dauphin winning consecutive district titles and advancing to the PIAA Class AAA State Championship game in 2018 and 2019, earning all-state second team recognition as a sophomore. She also was named PennLive Field Hockey Player of the Year her senior season.

Tabbed a top-10 player in the Class of 2022 by Max Field Hockey, McVeigh is a three-time first team all-state selection and a 2022 first team All-American. Playing her school hockey at Gwynedd Mercy, the talented forward led her squad in scoring all four seasons. She completed her scholastic career with 173 goals and 74 assists, a Gwynedd Mercy record. McVeigh racked up 71 goals and 25 assists her senior year en route to leading her team to the District 1 title and the state championship runner-up. She was named to the NFHCA all-region first team for her efforts.

A 2021 NFHCA First Team All-American and four-year letterwinner for Taylor Rountree at Frank W. Cox High School, Spear excelled in the cage throughout her scholastic career. In 2021 helped lead Cox to four straight regional and state championships en route to garnering countless awards her senior season. As a senior did not give up a single goal in either the region or state tournament and only allowed one score the entire season. Her success in the cage garnered her All-Tidewater Player of the Year, All-Tidewater, all-region, all-state, All-South and All-Mid-Atlantic Region first team accolades.
