DURHAM – Duke's
Brennan O'Neill and
Mike Adler have been named the ACC Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, following their performances in the win at No. 9 North Carolina. This is the third weekly honor for O'Neill and the second for Adler.
O'Neill shares the weekly recognition with Notre Dame's Jake Taylor. At North Carolina this past Saturday, O'Neill scored a career-high seven goals on only 10 shots to lead No. 15 Duke to a commanding, 15-6, victory over the Tar Heels. The Bay Shore, N.Y., native scored Duke's first three goals of the game as the Blue Devils took a 5-1 halftime lead. He proceeded to add three of the next five tallies to put Duke up 10-1. Overall, he scored six of the Blue Devils' first 10 goals. O'Neill leads Duke with 42 goals and 10 assists and is the only Division I player to record at least six goals in three different games.
Duke's standout goaltender, Adler made 19 saves, while allowing only five goals in the takedown of rival North Carolina. The native of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., had a stellar nine saves in the first quarter, helping Duke hold on to a 2-0 lead. He added an additional five in the second period as the Blue Devils built their lead to, 5-1.
With Adler anchoring the defensive effort, Duke held North Carolina scoreless for the first 27:25 of the game and then again for 15:54 from the second to the third quarters.
Adler's native's 19 saves pushed his career total to 757 to rank 19th all-time in NCAA history.
Adler is averaging 13.00 saves per game to lead the ACC and rank 12th nationally. His .561 save percentage is the best in the league and 13th in the nation, while his 10.75 goals against average is second among ACC goaltenders.
Duke returns to Koskinen for a three-game homestand, welcoming No. 16 Notre Dame at home Saturday, April 9th at 1 p.m.
