WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – No. 14 Duke women's tennis competed in a hard-fought battle against Wake Forest but were able to come out victorious as they earned a 4-3 win on Sunday afternoon at the Wake Forest Tennis Center.
The Blue Devils (13-3, 8-2 ACC) were the first to strike in the match, grabbing the doubles point behind a sweep from the tandems of
Chloe Beck and
Ellie Coleman, No. 75
Margaryta Bilokin and
Eliza Omirou and No. 80
Georgia Drummy and
Karolina Berankova. Beck and Coleman played in flight two with the duo defeating Samantha Martinelli and Peyton Pesavento by a score of 6-2. Bilokin and Omirou scored the win on court three as they took down Carolyn Campana and Mia Ahmad (6-2), while Drummy and Berankova beat No. 8 Anna Brylin and Brooke Killingsworth to give Duke an early 1-0 lead.
Wake Forest (12-8, 4-5 ACC) took a brief lead after Martinelli and No. 115 Killingsworth picked up singles wins at number four and five, respectively, but Duke immediately responded to tie the match thanks to the efforts of Beck. The seventh-ranked junior surged past Anna Campana (6-1,6-3) to deadlock the match at two apiece.
Two more singles matches wrapped up shortly thereafter with the conference foes splitting courts six and one. Playing against her former school, Omirou grinded out a tightly-contested 7-5,7-5 decision over Saby Nihalani at number six before Wake Forest's No. 48 Campana rallied from a set down to claim the match (2-6, 7-5, 6-3) in flight one.
Senior
Kelly Chen clinched the match for the Blue Devils on court three as she outlasted Brylin in a hard-fought, three-set tilt. Chen took the opening set 6-4, but Brylin was able to grab set two via tiebreaker (7-6 (5) after fighting back from an early two game deficit. The final set was an intense back-and-forth affair with the players tied after the first eight games. Chen was not to be denied, however, as the senior showed her resolve and collected the final two games to pull out a 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4 win.
Up Next
Duke returns home for its final three matches of the regular season, beginning with tilts against Georgia Tech (April 8) and Clemson (April 10). The Blue Devils will square off against the Yellow Jackets Friday at 6 p.m., before taking on the Tigers Sunday at 12 p.m.
