DURHAM – No. 10 Duke women's tennis earned its ninth conference win as the Blue Devils pulled out a 5-2 victory over Georgia Tech Friday evening at Ambler Tennis Stadium.
"I thought we did a good job competing," said head coach
Jamie Ashworth. "Georgia Tech is always a team that we struggle with. They beat us twice last year and they compete so hard. I thought we did a good job of answering that bell and flipping some singles matches after we lost four first sets."
Duke (14-3, 9-2 ACC) won flights two and three of doubles to secure the opening point, beginning with freshman
Ellie Coleman and junior
Chloe Beck's defeat of Georgia Tech (12-7, 7-3 ACC)'s 27th-ranked Ava Hrastar and Kylie Bilchev on court two. The No. 6 pairing of Carol Lee and Kate Sharuba claimed a 6-3 victory over No. 43
Georgia Drummy and
Karolina Berankova at number one, before
Eliza Omirou and
Margaryta Bilokin battled back from an early deficit to take down Gia Cohen and Ruth Marsh in flight three (6-4) to give Duke a 1-0 lead.
Bilokin started singles play off strong for Duke, commanding her matchup from start to finish to blow past Cohen (6-2, 6-1) on court five. No. 123
Kelly Chen increased the Blue Devils' advantage to three via her triumph over Mahak Jain in flight four. The senior rallied from a set down to collect a hard-fought, 0-6,6-3,6-4 victory.
No. 60 Lee was able to get the Yellow Jackets on the board after battling past 19th-ranked Drummy (7-6 (9), 6-3) on court one. Coleman clinched the match for Duke shortly after behind a win in the six spot. The rookie outlasted Rosie Garcia Gross to claim the opening set 7-5, but her adversary from Georgia Tech responded to take set two 6-3. In the deciding third set, Coleman was in complete control, grabbing six of the seven games to lock down the win.
"We got down in the doubles, fought back. Down in the singles, fought back," Ashworth added. "Once we gave ourselves those opportunities to get on top, I think we did a good job of taking advantage of those situations."
The match played out with the two conference foes splitting the remaining two courts – each one going the full three sets. Hrastar tallied the Yellow Jackets' second point when she defeated No. 99 freshman
Emma Jackson (7-6 (1), 4-6, 6-4) on court three. Ninth-ranked Beck dropped the first set but battled back to takedown No. 85 Bilchev (3-6, 7-6(3), 6-1) in flight two.
