SYRACUSE, N.Y. – No. 12 Duke softball (35-7, 15-3 ACC) dropped a 1-0 decision to Syracuse on Saturday afternoon at Skytop Softball Stadium.
Blue Devils starting pitcher
Jala Wright (9-2) secured another strong performance in the circle, allowing just three hits to the Orange (21-19, 4-13 ACC) while striking out six batters.
The two sides spent the entire game battling back and forth, with the Blue Devils earning a strong chance to score in the second inning. Duke loaded the bases on singles by
Kristina Foreman and
Francesca Frelick, as well as an
Ana Gold walk. However, Orange starter Ariana Adams escaped damage with a force-out at home plate to keep it level at 0-0.
The Orange would score the lone run of the game in the third inning, when Angel Jasso drove in Paris Woods, who reached second base on a single, then a wild pitch.
However, Wright continued to control the Orange offense, allowing just one hit for the remainder of the contest, to keep the Blue Devils in the game.
Duke found one more chance to score in the sixth inning, when
Claire Davidson and Frelick each reached on a walk and a single, getting Davidson to third base. However, the Orange would escape the jam unscathed, ultimately sealing a victory.
The Blue Devils will meet the Orange again for the series finale on Sunday at 12 p.m. The game will be streamed on ACC Network Extra.
Notes:
- With her second inning single, Foreman extends her hit streak to a team-high 11 games, while also extending her on-base streak to 14 straight contests.
- Frelick has now recorded back-to-back games with two or more hits for the first time in her collegiate career, with her third such game in her last six contests. The Lexington, Mass., native is hitting .533 in her last six games.
