LYNCHBURG, Va. – No. 12 Duke softball (34-6, 14-2 ACC) dropped a midweek decision at Liberty, 8-3, on Wednesday night at Liberty Softball Stadium.
Kristina Foreman led the way for the Duke offense, hitting a home run and driving in all three runs to stay red hot after collecting seven RBI at James Madison on Wednesday.
Peyton St. George went five innings in the circle, allowing five earned runs and striking out two in the loss.
The Flames (32-13, 15-0 ASUN) were the first to strike in the opening frame, as they loaded the bases on the first three batters of the game. Kara Canetto and Mary Clare Wilson would drive in two with back-to-back singles, but the Blue Devils escaped further trouble, stranding three runners.
After a scoreless second inning,
Kyla Morris led off the third with a single and
Kamryn Jackson reached on a fielding error following a sacrifice bunt to set up the Duke offense. After two outs earned by the Flames,
Rachel Crabtree drew a walk to bring up Foreman. The Tampa, Fla., native ripped a single up the middle to drive in two and tie the game at 2-2.
Liberty responded with a run in the bottom of the fourth, thanks to some savvy baserunning, but Foreman would have another answer in the sixth.
Foreman laced a 1-1 pitch into right center field and over the fence, to tie the game at 3-3. Her blast matched a single-season career high in home runs and kept the Blue Devils in the game.
However, the Flames would pull away late, scoring five runs on five hits in the bottom of the sixth inning to secure the 8-3 win.
The Blue Devils will be back in action this weekend, starting a three-game series at Syracuse. Game one will start at 3 p.m., on Friday, with two additional day games to follow on Saturday and Sunday. All three games will be streamed on ACC Network Extra.
Notes:
- With her third inning walk, Crabtree extended her on-base streak to 20 consecutive games.
- Foreman also extended her on-base streak to 12 contests and hit streak to nine games with a third inning single.
- Deja Davis extended her hitting streak to seven straight games, good for her longest of the season.
- The Blue Devils have one remaining non-conference game on the schedule after tonight's game. Duke is 20-4 overall in non-conference action.
