The Opening Faceoff

- Virginia sports an 8-2 overall record and 4-0 mark in conference action. The Cavaliers most recently defeated North Carolina 11-4. Their two losses came against Maryland and Richmond.
- Brennan O'Neill leads the offense with a career-best 57 points from 45 goals and 12 assists. Nakeie Montgomery has a career-high 42 points off of 25 goals and 17 assists, while Dyson Williams has 33 goals and 41 points overall.
- Sean Lulley has 36 points overall, while Andrew McAdorey is one of the league's top scoring freshman with 34. Duke is averaging 15.14 goals per game to rank seventh nationally.
- Defensively, Kenny Brower draws the opponent's top attackman and has 13 caused turnovers and 33 ground balls. Wilson Stephenson has 18 caused turnovers and 32 GBs, while Tyler Carpenter has 15 and 51, respectively. Jake Naso is 193-of-336 (.574) at the faceoff dot with 105 ground balls.

Scouting Virginia
- Virginia comes to Durham with an 8-2 record and unblemished 4-0 mark against ACC foes. The sixth-ranked Cavaliers are coming off an 11-4 victory against North Carolina over the weekend. Virginia's two losses came against No. 1 Maryland and Richmond.
- The Cavaliers are averaging 15.20 goals per game for the season, but have averaged just 12 goals per game in the past four games. Connor Shellenberger is the top scorer with 56 points (23g, 33a). Payton Cormier has 38, while Matt Moore has 29 in only eight outings. Virginia has scored in double digits every game this season.
- Defensively, Virginia sports the nation's third-best ride, holding opponents to a .753 clearing percentage. Cole Kastner leads the ACC with 2.70 caused turnovers per game. Virginia is allowing 11.20 goals per game overall and 13.0 in the past four outings.
- Petey LaSalla has taken 66 percent of the team's faceoffs, winning 114 for a 60 percent success rate. He has picked up 52 ground balls. Gabe Braun has taken 99 faceoffs and won for a .424 percentage.
- In goal, Matthew Nunes has started all 10 games and owns a 10.45 goals against average and a .540 save percentage. He is averaging 11.4 saves per game.
Series History
- One of the strangest phenomena in Division I lacrosse has been Duke's success over the Cavaliers under head coach John Danowski. The Blue Devils are 19-2 versus Virginia since 2007 with both losses coming in postseason action.
- Duke last lost to Virginia in the regular season in 2004, a 13-4 setback in Charlottesville. The Blue Devils have won the 18 games by an average of 5.0 goals per game and have scored at least 15 goals nine times.
- Duke is 12-1 against Virginia at Koskinen Stadium since 2000. The last loss in Durham to the Cavaliers was 2003, an 11-8 setback.
High-Powered Offenses Meet
- Thursday night's game between the Blue Devils and Cavaliers features the top two scoring offenses in the ACC. Virginia is scoring 15.20 goals per game, while Duke is averaging 15.14. The Cavaliers and Blue Devils both have scored at least 10 goals in all 10 games. Duke has managed 15-plus goals in eight of its 14 outings, while Virginia has done so in five of its 10 contests.
- The two teams own two of the top attackmen in the ACC. Connor Shellenberger is second in the ACC and fifth in the country with 5.60 points per game. O'Neill is fifth in the ACC with his 4.07 per game average.
The Clearing Game
- Virginia sports one of the most effective rides in the country statistically, holding opponents to a .753 clearing percentage. Cavalier foes are 171-of-227 on clear attempts this season. In Virginia's four ACC contests, opponents have been able to clear their defensive half just 77 percent of the time (65-of-84).
- On the opposite side of the ball, Duke has struggled clearing at times this season, doing so successfully 86 percent of the time (255-296). However, Duke has fared well in the past two games, clearing 39-of-40 opportunities. The Blue Devils rank fifth in the ACC and 30th nationally in the category.
Bouncing Back After a Loss
- Since 2007, Duke has only lost consecutive games 10 times. The Blue Devils suffered back-to-back losses twice in 2011 and lost three consecutive in 2015. Duke improved to 35-11 in the first game immediately following a loss after its win against North Carolina following the setback to Syracuse.

Second Half Success
- Duke has found a lot of success offensively and defensively in the second halves this season. Offensively, the Blue Devils are averaging 6.4 goals per game in the opening 30 minutes and 8.7 in the second halves.
- Defensively, Duke is giving up 6.1 goals per game in the opening halves and holding opponents to 4.9 in the final 30 minutes.
- Duke has been outscored in the second half just once and has outscored its opponents by at least five goals seven times. The Blue Devils have outscored opponents in the first quarter only four times.
