DURHAM – The No. 14 Duke softball program (26-5, 9-2 ACC) got at least one RBI from seven different players, en route to 9-1 win in five innings over Boston College on Wednesday night at Duke Softball Stadium.
Peyton St. George (14-2) struck out seven Eagles (14-15, 2-8 ACC) batters over four innings, allowing only three hits and one earned run.
Gisele Tapia paced the offense with three RBI and a double after entering the game as a pinch hitter.
Boston College was first to strike in the opening inning when Hannah Slike hit a solo home run down the left field line for a 1-0 advantage. However, St. George quickly settled down, striking out five batters in the first two innings, all of which were swinging strikeouts.
The Blue Devils quickly responded in the second inning, when
Caroline Jacobsen doubled, and
Kyla Morris singled and stole second base to set up
Kamryn Jackson. Jackson tied the game with an RBI sacrifice fly, and
Jameson Kavel drove in another run later that inning with an RBI double for a 2-1 lead.
Duke drove in two more runs in the third inning, when Jacobsen drew a bases loaded walk, before Morris delivered an RBI sacrifice fly out to foul territory in left field. The Blue Devils struck for multiple runs without a hit to take a 4-1 lead.
The extra base hits continued to pile up in the fourth and fifth innings for the Blue Devils. Kavel led off the fourth inning with a single and steal and
Kelly Torres drove her in with an RBI double for a 5-1 advantage.
Ana Gold was next to drive in a run, as she launched a double of her own to right center field to make it 6-1.
With a chance to end the game in the bottom of the fifth, the Blue Devils took full advantage. Jackson and Kavel each reached on a walk to set up Tapia. The Long Beach, Calif., native laced her third career triple to right center field, clearing the bases and allowing
Rachel Crabtree a chance to end the game early. Crabtree lofted a ball to left field to add another sacrifice fly and secure a 9-1 win.
The Blue Devils will be back in action on Saturday at 2 p.m., hosting the Eagles for the second of three games. The game will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra.
