DURHAM, N.C. - The historic Washington Duke Inn provided a perfect venue for the annual Iron Dukes Scholarship and Endowment celebration on Sunday, February 13th. After a one-year hiatus due to COVID-19 restrictions, Duke University's student-athletes, coaches, and donors were able to come together once again to celebrate in-person the incredible Duke experience generously provided by Duke Athletics' scholarship and endowment benefactors.
The event, held Sunday morning, began with a theater-style program where four extraordinary student-athletes thoughtfully shared their personal stories as Duke students and what being a student-athlete has meant to them. The program featured remarks in-person by
Amelia Shunk (rowing) and
Lewis McGarvey (men's soccer), while
Deja Davis (softball) and
Mark Williams (men's basketball) sent in pre-recorded videos as they were traveling with their respective teams for competition.
Erin Marsh (women's track and field) and
Michaela Reinhart (women's cross country/track and field) served as emcees throughout the event.
The Duke student-athlete experience is more than just the games and competitions, and these student-athletes' stories provided a glimpse into the impact made by gifts given for athletic scholarships and operational endowments. Over 400 of Duke's student-athletes receive athletic scholarship aid and all 27 Varsity sports are supported via operational endowments. These gifts not only enhance the everyday lives of Duke student-athletes, but also leave a lasting legacy for generations to come.
Following the program, donors joined staff members for brunch, while student-athletes enjoyed a grab-and-go breakfast in order to adhere to current Duke Athletics COVID-19 dining protocols. During brunch, Vice President and Director of Athletics,
Nina King, toasted Deputy Director of Athletics/Philanthropy,
Tom Coffman, for his 17 phenomenal years of service to Duke Athletics. Coffman, set to retire at the end of the academic year, has been an integral part of providing the very best experience for Duke's student-athletes by raising over $500 million during his tenure and helping to secure the seven largest gifts in Duke Athletics history. After brunch, donors were invited to attend any of the four exciting Duke Athletics events taking place on Duke's campus Sunday afternoon.
