PINEHURST, N.C. – Senior Quinn Riley shot a dazzling round of 5-under 65, while Jimmy Zheng was also in red numbers to finish third as the Duke men's golf team recorded a second-place finish at the Wake Forest Invitational at Pinehurst No. 2 on Tuesday.
Zheng shot 1-under 69 on Tuesday to place in a tie for third at 3-over 213, matching his best career finish. Riley charged up the leaderboard with the low-round of the tournament – a five-under 65 that was highlighted by a bogey-free 31 on the back nine.
Riley's career-best 65 allowed the senior from Raleigh to finish in a tie for 17th at 11-over 221. He birided holes four, five and six in succession and opened the back nine with another run of birdies on three of the first four holes. His 10 birdies for the tournament were second most in the field.
"I really just tried to take it one shot at a time," said Riley. "I know how tough it can be out here, especially after playing yesterday. I found myself making strings of birdies and I just kept it going. I had the idea that people were going to go low with the better weather and less wind and I just kept that mindset and it took me deep."
Sophomore Ian Siebers posted a 1-over 73 on Tuesday for a 54-hole total of 9-over 219, good for solo 12th place.
Duke, and tournament-winner Clemson, were the only teams with multiple players to finish in the top 12. The Tigers went wire-to-wire to claim the team title at 18-over, followed by Duke (+34), Wake Forest (+42), NC State (+47) and San Francisco (+47) in the top five.
Duke has finished in the top five in five of its seven tournaments this season and its second-place at Pinehurst finish was a season best.
Clemson's Zack Gordon and Colby Patton were co-medalists at 2-over 212, a shot better than Zheng and East Carolina's AJ Beechler.
Freshmen Kelly Chinn and Luke Sample each finished tied for 41st at 19-over 229. Chinn carded a 76 on Tuesday, while Sample came home with a 78.
Playing individually, freshman John Peters was tied for 36th at 18-over 228 that included a final-round 76. Sophomore Daniel Uranga placed 63rd, shooting 78 on Tuesday.
The Blue Devils are next in action with a pair of tournaments March 27-29 – the Seahawk Invitational in Wilmington, N.C., March 27-28, and the Valspar Collegiate in Palm City, Fla., March 28-29.
