DURHAM – It's a busy weekend for the Duke men's golf team as a pair of Blue Devils wrapped up the first day of action at the UNCW Seahawk Intercollegiate and a group of five prepares to compete at the Valspar Collegiate in Palm City, Fla., March 28-29.
Playing 36 holes on the first day of action at the Country Club of Landfall were graduate student
Qi wen Wong and sophomore
Daniel Uranga. Wong shot a 7-over in his opening round and a 4-over in the second to finish 11-over for the day. Uranga came in at 8-over on the first 18 holes and was 9-over in the afternoon round.
The duo completes the tournament on Monday with a final 18 holes.
Competing for the Blue Devils at the Valspar Collegiate on the par-71 Floridian are senior
Quinn Riley, sophomores
Ian Siebers and
Jimmy Zheng and freshmen
Kelly Chinn and
John Peters. Duke is paired with South Florida and Ohio State for Monday's 36 holes of continuous play that begins at 8:30 a.m.
Riley and Zheng are coming off outstanding showings at the Wake Forest Invitational where Riley fired an impressive 5-under 65 on the final day, while Zheng was also in red figures to give Duke a runner-up finish at the tournament.
The Valspar Collegiate features 15 teams, including top-five programs North Carolina and Texas Tech. Duke is set to play 36 holes on Monday and wrap up action the following day.
Duke has finished in the top five in five of its seven tournaments this season and its second place at Pinehurst finish was a season best.
