DURHAM – Duke women's basketball graduate Chelsea Gray, along with six other athletes who have previously claimed gold while playing for USA Basketball at the senior level, are expected to attend the 2022 USA Women's National Team training camp from March 29-April 2 in Minneapolis. The training camp will culminate with an April 2 practice that will be free and open to the public from 10-11:30 a.m. (CDT) at Tourney Town, located inside the Minneapolis Convention Center.
Joining Gray will be Blue Devil head coach
Kara Lawson, who will be a court coach for the training.
"I'm looking forward to our second camp ahead of the WNBA season," said Cheryl Reeve, 2021-24 USA National Team and Minnesota Lynx head coach. "We have a small group of athletes, some of whom we saw in February and others who will be joining us for the first time in 2022. With the FIBA World Cup just six months away, this camp will be important in our development as a team as we continue to evaluate players for the USA team in September. I also think the open practice at Tourney Town will be an exciting way to close our camp, providing our local fans and those fans coming in for the Final Four a glimpse of the team."
Closed practice sessions from March 29-April 1 will be held at The Courts at Mayo Clinic Square beginning at 10 a.m. each day, and the final 30 minutes will be open to credentialed media only.
Accepting invitations to the training camp are FIBA World Cup and Olympic gold medalists Angel McCoughtry (Minnesota Lynx), Kelsey Plum (Las Vegas Aces), Breanna Stewart (Seattle Storm) and A'ja Wilson (Las Vegas Aces), as well as Olympic gold medalists Ariel Atkins (Washington Mystics), Allisha Gray (Dallas Wings) and Chelsea Gray (Las Vegas Aces).
Gray was a member of the USA Basketball Women's National Team that took home the gold medal at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, Japan. A four-time WNBA All-Star, Gray is coming off helping lead the Las Vegas Aces to a semifinal appearance in the WNBA playoffs, while averaging 11.2 points and 5.9 assists a year ago. A 2014 Blue Devil graduate, she helped lead Duke to two ACC Championships and three ACC regular season titles, while earning 2013 All-America accolades.
Also expected to attend the camp are Dearica Hamby (Las Vegas Aces), Kelsey Mitchell (Indiana Fever), Aerial Powers (Minnesota Lynx), Azurá Stevens (Chicago Sky) and Courtney Williams (Connecticut Sun).
As 2021-24 USA National Team head coach, Cheryl Reeve (Minnesota Lynx) will lead the coaching staff.
Joining Lawson as a court coach will be Adia Barnes (Arizona), Joni Taylor (Texas A&M) and Jeff Walz (Louisville).
The training camp will be used as evaluation for the 2022-24 USA Women's National Team athlete pool, which will be announced at a later date. Should the U.S. qualify for the 2024 Olympics, the 2022 USA World Cup Team and 2024 U.S. Olympic Basketball Team, as well as additional training camps and competitions, are expected to be comprised of members of the 2022-24 USA National Team player pool.
The athletes were selected by the USA Basketball Women's National Team Committee, which is chaired by Connecticut Sun president and 2018-21 USA National Team assistant coach Jennifer Rizzotti and includes Olympic and World Cup gold medalists Seimone Augustus and DeLisha Milton-Jones, 2017-21 USA National Team head coach Dawn Staley and WNBA head of league operations Bethany Donaphin.
