DURHAM – Fresh off the ACC Indoor Championships, three members of the Duke track and field team were announced as qualifiers for the 2022 NCAA Indoor Championships, announced by the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Track and Field and Cross Country Committee Tuesday night.
Graduate students
Nick Dahl and
Erin Marsh along with senior
Isabel Wakefield will represent the Blue Devils at the championships March 11-12, held at the Birmingham CrossPlex in Birmingham, Ala. Dahl will compete in the men's mile run, while Marsh and Wakefield gear up for the women's pentathlon.
The trio enters the championship meet following sensational performances at the ACC Indoors that featured six combined All-ACC First Team selections. Marsh collected a pair of gold medals in the 60m hurdles and 4x400m relay, as well as a silver medal in the women's long jump. She became the first Duke women's track and field athlete ever to claim the 60 hurdles crown. Dahl claimed the gold medal in the men's mile run, while Wakefield concluded the conference meet with a silver medal in the pentathlon and bronze in the 60m hurdles.
Marsh garners her fourth career selection to the NCAA Indoor Championships in the pentathlon. The Buford, Ga., native is looking to build off last season's historic performance in the event. Marsh earned First Team All-America honors and smashed the program record with a point total of 4,344 en route to a bronze medal, becoming the first Blue Devils to medal since
Megan Clark placed second in the pole vault in 2016. She collected her second consecutive first-place finish in the Hokie Invitational pentathlon earlier this season with 4,172 points – a mark that ranks sixth in the country and second in the ACC.
Dahl and Wakefield both earn their first career NCAA Indoor Championships qualifications. Dahl put on a clinic at the conference meet – Behind his run of 4:04.72, he became the first Duke men's indoor champion in the mile since Bob Wheeler in 1973. The Philadelphia, Pa., native's historic performance at the conference meet culminated a strong indoor regular season. At the Camel City Invite, Dahl broke the school-record mile time with a 3:57.08c finish. He broke his own record just one week later, as he shaved two seconds and clocked an official time 3:55.89, which ranks 16th nationally and second in the ACC.
Wakefield produced the seventh-highest national and third-highest league indoor pentathlon point total of 4,159 points at the Hokie Invitational, which ranks third all-time in program lore. At the ACC Indoor Championships this past weekend, the senior totaled 4,147 points to finish as the runner-up. Wakefield's performance included a pair of first-place finishes in the 60-meter hurdles (8.20 seconds) and long jump (6.11m (20-0.50 feet)) – the latter improving her No. 4 all-time program mark. She also took second in the pentathlon 800m run with a 2:14.16 finish.
All three Duke student-athletes will compete on Friday, March 11. Marsh and Wakefield commence the pentathlon events at 10:20 a.m. with the 60m hurdles, while Dahl gears up to take part in the men's mile run semifinal slated for 4 p.m. More information on the NCAA Indoor Championships, including start lists and event times, can be found on GoDuke.com closer to the date of the event.
