Sarah Foley and
Catherine Purnell were invited as qualifiers to the 2022 NCAA Women's Swimming & Diving Championships, announced Wednesday.
Foley earned invitations in the 200-yard individual medley (1:54.47), 200 freestyle (1:43.85) and 200 breaststroke (2:06.63). Purnell was invited in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:55.61. She is also eligible to compete in the 400 individual medley and 500 freestyle as she held NCAA 'B' Standard times in both events.
A native of Philadelphia, Pa., Foley has been stellar in her sophomore campaign at Duke. She set five individual school records this season, in addition to two relay records. Recently at the ACC Championships, Foley earned All-ACC honors in the 200 freestyle and 200 individual medley while placing fourth in the 200 breaststroke. She returns to the NCAA Championship after competing in the 200 individual medley, 200 breaststroke and 100 breaststroke last season.
Purnell is making her second appearance at the NCAA Championship after narrowly missing the finals in the 400 individual medley (26th) and the 200 butterfly (30th) last season. She currently holds the second-fastest time in program history in the 200 butterfly and ranks in the top seven in the 500 freestyle and the 400 individual medley. At the 2022 ACC Championship, the Manassas, Va., native reached the consolation final of the 500 freestyle and 400 individual medley to score 30 points at the meet.
Prior to the Women's NCAA Championship, the Duke diving team returns to action at the NCAA Zone B Diving Championships to seek qualification. The meet will run March 6-9 in Atlanta, Ga.
