BALTIMORE – Loyola attackman Kevin Lindley scored six goals and had seven points overall to lead the Greyhounds to a 12-10 victory over ninth-ranked Duke in non-conference men's lacrosse action Sunday afternoon at Ridley Athletic Complex.
The Greyhounds jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first 12 minutes and held off a late fourth-quarter charge by the Blue Devils to improve to 2-3 on the season. Duke falls to 7-3 overall and has one more non-conference game before opening ACC play.
Sophomore
Brennan O'Neill paced the Duke offense with four goals, his fifth hat trick of the season and the 14th of his career. Graduate student
Nakeie Montgomery dished a pair of assists as Duke got single tallies from seven other players, including freshman
Reed Landin scoring the first of his career.
Senior
Jadon Kerry scored a goal and handed out an assist to provide the spark off the bench in the fourth quarter.
Loyola was firing on all cylinders in the first half, firing off 33 shots and scoring 10 times for a 10-2 lead the break. The Greyhounds held the Blue Devils to only 10 shots in the opening half and forced 11 turnovers. O'Neill had the lone two goals for Duke, scoring twice in a span of 15 seconds late in the first quarter.
Junior
Dyson Williams scored to start the third quarter, making it a 10-3 game before Loyola answered with a pair for its largest lead of the game, 12-3.
It was all Duke in the final 18 minutes of the game as the Blue Devils scored the game's final seven goals. Graduate student
Cameron Mulé once again scored on extra man, his fifth of the season to spark the 7-0 run.
O'Neill notched his fifth man-up score of the year midway through the fourth quarter and the combination of Kerry,
Griffin Catlett and
Reed Landin came off the bench to get the Blue Devils within four with 2:29 to play. It was the first goal of the year for all three. Freshman
Liam McLane also chipped in an assist off the bench.
Defensively, Duke held Loyola without a goal for the final 18:45 and forced the Greyhounds into five fourth-quarter turnovers. Loyola managed just 12 shots in the second half, while Duke took 26.
In goal,
Mike Adler made 13 saves and picked up three ground balls. Sam Shafer had eight saves for Loyola, five of which game in the fourth quarter.
At the faceoff dot,
Jake Naso went 9-of-20 and had five ground balls. Junior
Cameron Henry picked up his first career faceoff victory, winning 1-of-2.
The Blue Devils close out non-conference play Saturday, March 19 against Towson at Audi Field in Washington, D.C. Faceoff is set for 6 p.m.
