DURHAM – The Tewaaraton Foundation announced additions to the 2022 Tewaaraton Award Watch Lists and sophomore
Katie DeSimone was among the 13 new honorees, the foundation announced Thursday.
DeSimone joins
Catriona Barry and Maddie Jenner who were named to the initial watch list in February.
The initial lists that were announced February 10 included the top players across all three divisions of NCAA lacrosse to highlight the early contenders for this year's Tewaaraton Award. On April 21, the field will be narrowed to 25 men's and 25 women's nominees. Nominees can be players on the watch lists or players not on the watch lists, effectively allowing for a third round of additions.
DeSimone has had standout performances on the offensive front for the Blue Devils this season. The native of Bay Shore, N.Y., is second on the team with 39 points (26G, 13A) and is shooting .510 percent. DeSimone ranks second nationally in total points this season and has five games with four-or-more points. She also owns 10 ground balls and three caused turnovers. In Duke's setback at No. 3 Syracuse, DeSimone dished a career-high five dimes, which ties for second on Duke's individual single-game records list and ties for fifth nationally this season. Last season, the ACC All-Freshman Team honoree collected 25 goals.
The Tewaaraton Award annually honors the top male and female college lacrosse player in the United States. The selection committees are made up of premier collegiate coaches and are appointed annually by The Tewaaraton Foundation.
Five men's and five women's finalists will be announced in early May. The Tewaaraton Award recipients will be chosen after the conclusion of the collegiate lacrosse season.
The No. 7 Duke women's lacrosse team (6-1, 0-1 ACC) welcomes Pittsburgh (3-3, 0-2 ACC) and Penn (1-3, 0-1 Ivy League) to Koskinen Stadium for two contests this week. The Blue Devils and Panthers square off Thursday at 6 p.m., on ACCN before a noon tilt against the Quakers on Sunday.
