DURHAM - Duke fencing kicked off the 2022 ACC Fencing Championship on a high note Saturday as six Blue Devils collected individual medals in Cameron Indoor Stadium.Â
Sarah Lurye brought home silver in women's epee, while Vivi Buchmann (saber), Christina Ferrari (foil), Terence Lee (saber), Rachel Kowalsky (epee) and David Tierney (foil) captured bronze medals in their respective events.Â
Sophomore Lurye notched 11 victories during pool play and earned the No. 2 seed in the semifinal/final bracket. Lurye faced Laura Boden (Boston College) in the semifinal and played to a 15-11 victory, advancing her to the championship bout. Lurye went against top-seeded Amanda Pirkowski (Notre Dame) and fell 15-10 to win silver.Â
Also competing in women's epee was rookie Kowalsky, who notched 10 wins during pool play. She earned the fourth seed and fell to Pirkowski in the semifinal but came back for a 15-9 win against Boden in a fence-off for third.Â
Rounding out the women's individual podium success on Saturday was Buchmann in saber. She tallied 10 wins during opening pool play to be the fourth seed. She went up against eventual champion Daria Kudriavtseva (Notre Dame) and fell 15-3. Buchmann then secured bronze with a 15-12 victory over teammate Anneke Zegers in a battle for third place.Â
Lee and Tierney advanced to the semifinal bouts in saber and foil, respectively, and each collected bronze to pace the men's team.
Lee earned the fourth seed and battled top-seeded Malcolm Fields (Notre Dame) and fell by a tough 15-14 margin. Lee then faced Bolang Meng (Boston College) in a fence-off for third following a 15-7 victory to claim the bronze medal.Â
Tierney entered the semifinals as foil's third seed and faced Brian Wang (Boston College). The two squared off but Tierney ultimately fell to Wang, 15-9. In the battle for third place, Tierney went against Adam Yang (Boston College) and captured a 15-11 win for the bronze medal.Â
The top two finishers at each weapon comprise the 2022 All-ACC fencing team.
The team competition will be held Sunday, with the men kicking things off at 9:30 a.m. and the women opening at 1 p.m. ACC Network Extra will have live coverage of the team championships beginning at 9:30 a.m. ACC Network will carry a tape-delayed broadcast of the individual finals at 8 p.m. Sunday. The men's team finals will re-air at 1 p.m. Monday, while the women's team finals will re-air at 1 p.m. Tuesday.
