DURHAM – Duke women's basketball fell to Boston College on senior night, dropping a 67-51 decision to the Eagles Thursday evening at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Freshman
Shayeann Day-Wilson scored a dozen points and dished a team-leading five assists and senior
Elizabeth Balogun chipped in 11 points. Classmate
Onome Akinbode-James pulled down six boards to lead the efforts on the glass.
Duke (16-11, 7-10 ACC) jumped out to an early lead after producing six of the game's first eight points. Graduate student
Lexi Gordon opened the contest scoring with a trey from the left corner and classmate
Jade Williams added three the old-fashioned way to put the Blue Devils up by six.
Amaya Finklea-Guity and
Onome Akinbode-James each added buckets of their own, but Boston College held a 19-10 margin at the end of one after closing the quarter with a 17-4 surge.
The Eagles extended their lead to a dozen midway through the quarter before Duke sliced the deficit in half behind a pair of defensive stops. After Day-Wilson nailed a midrange jumper, the Blue Devils forced a Boston College miss at the rim and turned it into a fastbreak opportunity for junior
Celeste Taylor. On the ensuing possession, Day-Wilson picked the pocket of Marnelle Garraud and finished at the other end to close the gap to 26-20. Akinbode-James tallied her second field goal shortly after, but Boston College maintained an eight-point ledger at the end of 20 minutes.
Day-Wilson and Williams each scored five first-half points to lead Duke, with Day-Wilson also leading the way with three helpers. Akinbode-James grabbed a team-best four rebounds in the opening stanza.
Akinbode-James scored off an offensive rebound, and Gordon sank another triple to pull Duke within five before a 17-2 run extended the visitors lead to 20 points. Day-Wilson went 2-2 at the charity stripe, Balogun converted a three-point play and Akinbode-James cashed in another bucket to trim the deficit heading into the fourth.
The Blue Devils came out hot to start the fourth using a 7-0 run early in the period to pull within 52-43. Three points via Day-Wilson, a short jumper by Balogun and Taylor's right-wing triple got Duke back into the game and pulled the Blue Devils within single digits.
That would be as close as Duke would get for the remainder of the contest, however. Boston College extended its lead back to 18 before going on to win by 16.
Cameron Swartz led the Eagles (18-10, 9-8 ACC) with 21 points.
