PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. – Senior
Quinn Riley led the Duke men's golf team with a top 10 finish as the Watersound Invitational wrapped up Tuesday at the Shark's Tooth Golf Course in Panama City Beach, Fla.
Riley's 3-under 213 marked a career-low 54-hole score for the senior from Raleigh, who closed with a 2-under 70 on Tuesday for his second career top-10 finish and first this season. Riley was tied for ninth overall, firing rounds of 69 and 70 on Monday and Tuesday to climb into the top 10.
On a tough-scoring final round, Riley's was one of just 18 rounds under par of the 71 golfers in the field. He birdied six holes on Tuesday, including closing birdies on the par-4 7th and 8th holes (his 16th and 17th of the day). His birdie on the 7th was one of just nine yielded by the hole for the tournament, which played as the seventh toughest this week.
As a team, Duke finished 11th overall at 12-over 876 for the tournament. The team was 4-over 292 in the final round. Georgia Tech went wire-to-wire to claim the team title at 15-under par, followed by Alabama (-10), Notre Dame (-6), Virginia Tech (-2) and Clemson (even) in the top five. Alabama's Canon Claycomb was the individual medalist at 14-under par.
Sophomore
Jimmy Zheng collected a top-25 finish, as the sophomore was 1-over 217 for the tournament. He was 2-over 74 on Tuesday and placed tied for 23rd. Freshman
Luke Sample shot 76 on Tuesday and finished tied for 41st at 6-over 222.
Sophomore
Ian Siebers birdied three of his seven holes on Tuesday to card an even-par 72 in the final round. He was tied for 48th overall at 8-over 224, while freshman
Kelly Chinn finished 69th at 17-over 233.
Duke, which returns to the Shark's Tooth Course in late April for the ACC Championship, is next in action March 7-8 at the Wake Forest Invitational at Pinehurst No. 2.
