Shepherd Paces Blue Devils on Day One of Moon Golf Invitational

MELBOURNE, Fla. – Duke women's golf junior Erica Shepherd paced the Blue Devils on Sunday in the opening round of the Moon Golf Invitational, as the 2021 All-American carded a 1-over-par, 73, and is currently in the top-25, individually, with 36 holes remaining at the 6,417-yard, par-72 Classic Course at Suntree Country Club.

A native of Greenwood, Ind., Shepherd carded two birdies on the day and is tied for 23rd overall with a 73. She opened the spring season with six pars, before hitting her 6-iron from 160 yards to seven feet for birdie. Shepherd missed the fairway on the next hole and suffered a bogey, before making the turn at even-par, 36. She totaled six pars, two bogeys and one birdie on the back nine to finish with a 73. Shepherd collected her second birdie of the day on the 438-yard, par four 12th hole as she sank a 10-foot putt. She hit nine fairways, 13 greens and rolled 32 putts.

Florida State (286) holds the individual lead, while Virginia (287), Florida (291), Louisville (291), LSU (292) and UCF (292) rounded out the top five. As a team, Duke shot a 304 and carded 10 birdies.

Both Phoebe Brinker and Rylie Heflin each shot 76 on Sunday and are tied for 48th on the individual leaderboard.

Brinker, who hails from Wilmington, Del, rolled in a 25-foot birdie on the first hole to kick off the spring in the red, but played the next nine holes at 5-over-par. She got a stroke back on the 350-yard, par four 11th as she drained a 15-foot downhill birdie putt. Brinker played a seven-hole stretch on the back nine at two-under-par as she sank another 15-foot downhill birdie on No. 16. She dropped two shots on the final hole to close the day.

After opening with a par and double-bogey, Heflin got things rolling over the next eight holes as she was 3-under-par during that stretch. She hit her 6-iron from 164 yards on No. 3 to 10 feet, hit her 58-degree wedge from 84 yards to two feet and putted from just off the green on the par-five 10th to four feet and sank all three putts for birdie. Heflin, who is from Avondale, Pa., struggled on the way in to finish with a 76.

Sophomore Anne Chen finished her first round with a 2-over-par score over her final 11 holes to sign for a 79 on day one. The Sugar Land, Texas, product was limited to one birdie on the day, which was on the par-five fifth.

Junior Megan Furtney was the only Blue Devil to close the day with a birdie on the par-five 18th as she hit her 7-iron from 166 yards onto the green in two and was able to two-putt for birdie from 45 feet. She closed the day with an 81.

LSU's Ingrid Lindblad fired a 6-under, 66, on day one and holds in the individual lead.

Duke will tee off on Monday for round two beginning at 10:10 a.m., off hole No. 1 along with Augusta and Miami.
