GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The No. 14 Duke softball program (7-2, 0-0 ACC) saw their bats come alive on the second of three days at the T-Mobile Tournament, hosted by the University of Florida.
The Blue Devils opened the day with a 13-1 (F/5) victory over Florida A&M (1-6, 0-0 SWAC) and closed the night with a 6-3 win over Louisville (6-3, 0-0 ACC).
Duke vs. Florida A&M
The Blue Devils were quick out of the gate against the Rattlers, with
Ana Gold opening with a single, before stealing second base. As she's done all weekend,
Jameson Kavel drove her home, launching a home run over the left field scoreboard to give Duke an early 2-0 lead.
On the mound,
Peyton St. George was taking care of business, striking out the first three batters she faced. Her offense would add three more runs in the bottom of the second, as Gold drove home
Gisele Tapia and
Francesca Frelick on an RBI double and would later score on a wild pitch to go up 5-0.
After the Rattlers got one back, Duke put its foot on the gas in the third inning, scoring eight runs to put the game out of reach. The runs started with back-to-back home runs, first with a two-run blast by
Kristina Foreman for her team leading fourth, followed by
Kamryn Jackson to deep right center to make it 8-1.
Later, Tapia was able to draw a walk and took advantage of two wild pitches to move to third base.
Sarah Goddard batted her in on an RBI single, to extend the lead to eight.
After
Taylor Krapf reached on an error and
Rachel Crabtree was hit by a pitch,
Claire Davidson stepped the plate as a pinch hitter. The Lakewood Ranch, Fla., native took a 2-2 pitch to center field for a grand slam, recording her first collegiate home run to put the game out of reach at 13-1.
Jala Wright closed the game out with two hitless innings in the circle.
Duke vs. Louisville
Battling an ACC foe in a non-conference matchup, the Blue Devils were the first on the board in the third inning. After back-to-back walks, the Blue Devils made the Cardinals pay, as Jackson launched a two-RBI double to center field to open the scoring.
In the fourth inning, Gold wasted little time, launching a towering home run into center field to extend the lead to 3-0. Kavel would keep her big weekend going with a double before
Caroline Jacobsen drove her in to make it 4-0.
The Cardinals responded in the fourth and fifth innings, chipping away at the lead until they trailed 4-3. With the tying run at first in the bottom of the fifth, St. George was called in to clean it up, inducing a groundout to end the inning.
St. George added another key moment in the sixth, stranding two runners with an emphatic strikeout of Jenna Servi to keep the score at 4-3. The Blue Devils would pick her up in the seventh, when Tapia drove home Foreman on a two-run blast to right field, making it 6-3. St. George ultimately secured her second save, getting three quick outs in the bottom of the seventh.
Shelby Walters got the start in the circle for the Blue Devils, allowing just one earned run over 4.2 innings pitched, securing her third win of the season.
