GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The No. 14 Duke softball program (5-2, 0-0 ACC) split the first two games of the T-Mobile Tournament on Friday, beating Villanova, 4-2 and falling to No. 4 Florida, 9-3 at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium.
Duke vs. Villanova
The Blue Devils offense got out to a quick start against the Wildcats (2-5, 0-0 Big East) in the opener, with back-to-back hits from
Ana Gold and
Kelly Torres to put runners on first and third base.
Rachel Crabtree was next to the plate and drove in Gold on an RBI groundout to take a 1-0 lead.
In the second inning, the Blue Devils added another run following a
Kamryn Jackson double. Jackson advanced to third on a wild pitch and freshman
Taylor Krapf drove her in for a 2-0 lead. The Blue Devils would add two more runs in the third inning, thanks to a booming two-run home run by
Jameson Kavel. She launched her third of the season off a palm tree in left center field to make it 4-0.
While the Blue Devils were adding run support,
Claire Davidson was delivering a strong performance out of the bullpen after entering in the second inning. The Lakewood Ranch, Fla., native delivered 3.1 hitless innings in the circle and ended up finishing the day with 5.0 innings, allowing just two hits and two runs, while striking out five. With a runner on first in the top of the seventh inning,
Peyton St. George came in and shut the door for a two-out save.
Duke vs. Florida
Much like the opening game, the Blue Devils were quick out of the gate. After a hit-by-pitch and walk, Kavel recorded another big hit, this time launching a two-run double to the center field wall to take a 2-0 lead. However, the Gators (7-0, 0-0 SEC) were able to strike for three runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning.
The Gators would go on to add runs in the second, fourth and fifth innings, extending the lead to 9-2. Kavel would not go quietly, launching a triple, before
Caroline Jacobsen drove her in to shave the deficit to 9-3.
Kavel finished the day hitting 3-for-6 with a double, triple and home run over the two games, while making several standout plays in the field.
The Blue Devils will be back for two more games on Saturday, facing Florida A&M at 4:30 p.m., before concluding with a matchup against Louisville at 7 p.m.
Notes:
- In the win over Villanova, Krapf tallied her first collegiate RBI.
- Kavel notched her third multi-hit game of the season, good for the team lead. She also took over the RBI lead with 11 on the season.
- Kavel and Crabtree each played in their 200th game on Friday. The duo are the only two Blue Devils to accomplish this feat.
- Davidson matched the longest outing of her career, going five innings in the win over Villanova.
- Five players; Gold, Jackson, Jacobsen, Kavel and Torres have reached base safely in all seven games this season. Kavel (6) and Jackson (5) hold the longest active hit streaks.
