DURHAM – The Duke women's lacrosse team tallied two dominant victories to open the 2022 season. The Blue Devils defeated Gardner-Webb, 22-3, Friday evening before powering past Elon, 25-5, Sunday.
CLIMBING THE RANKINGS
The Blue Devils started the season ranked No. 8 in the country but after its hot start, Duke climbed to No. 6. This ranking is the highest for the Blue Devils since 2016.
DESO FILLING UP THE STAT SHEET
Sophomore
Katie DeSimone had two standout performances on the offensive front for the Blue Devils. The Bay Shore, N.Y., native posted 13 goals and an assist for 14 points off a .650 shooting percentage. She also grabbed four ground balls and a caused turnover.
Last season, the ACC All-Freshman Team honoree collected 25 goals and is well on her way to exceeding that this spring.
FAST AND FURIOUS
Through two games, Duke has tallied 47 goals and has limited its opponents to just eight.
Duke has proven to score fast and furiously this early season and received goal contributions from 15 different players. Not only are they scoring in bunches, the Blue Devils are also sharing the ball well with 27 assists on 47 goals, led by
Caroline DeBellis and
Eva Greco with five each.
THE DRAW CONTROL QUEEN
Senior draw specialist
Maddie Jenner was spectacular this weekend, tallying 31 draw controls in two games. In Duke's win against Elon on Sunday, Jenner grabbed a career-high 19, surpassing her previous of 16.
BLUE DEVIL FIRSTS
There were a few firsts for many Blue Devils over the weekend as four recorded first points in a Duke uniform.
Redshirt freshman
Izzy Marsh tallied two goals in Duke's win over Elon on Sunday while junior
Olivia Navaroli added her first-career goal against Gardner-Webb. Rookies
Kerry Nease and
Mattie Shearer got in on the action as well by dishing an assist each.
Redshirt junior
Veronica Hineman tallied her first goal since 2020 as she was sidelined last season due to injury.
Freshman goalkeeper
Kennedy Everson saw nearly 60 minutes of action in two games. She leads the team with seven saves for a .700 save percentage and a 3.42 GAA in her first Blue Devil outing.
MILESTONES TO WATCH
Katie Cronin
Katie Cronin currently owns 96 career points (79G, 17A) and needs just four points to become the 32nd player in Duke history to reach the 100-point plateau.
Maddie Jenner
Maddie Jenner needs 111 draw controls to surpass her sister, Olivia, and become Duke's all-time draw control leader with 513. She currently has 402 to her name and is the NCAA's active career leader in draw controls per game (8.24) and sits fourth in total draw controls.
Abby Landry
Abby Landry needs 24 points to reach 100 for her career. Through four years of action, Landry boasts 76 points (66G, 10A).
Duke will hit the road for two consecutive contests away from Koskinen Stadium. The Blue Devils will take on William & Mary Friday, Feb. 18 at 4 p.m., before a 1 p.m., contest against High Point on Feb. 20.
