ELON, N.C. – It was another fast and furious performance by the eighth-ranked Duke women's lacrosse team with a 25-5 victory over Elon on Sunday afternoon.
With the win, the Blue Devils improve to 2-0 overall in the young season and have tallied a whopping 47 goals in two contests. Duke's 39 points on Sunday set a single-game record as the previous of 38 was also set against Elon.
"This was a good test for us," head coach
Kerstin Kimel said. "The weather was not ideal, but [I'm] really happy with the quality of our play despite the fact that it was a road game and with the weather. I thought our kids came out and played a really great game."
Much like Friday evening, the Blue Devils scored fast and often as Duke received scoring contributions from 10 different players. Duke was led by sophomore
Katie DeSimone with a career-high seven goals and graduate student
Catriona Barry with five. DeSimone's seven goals ties for second on Duke's individual single game records list.
Senior draw specialist
Maddie Jenner also saw a career afternoon with a whopping 19 draw controls and added three goals and an assist for a hat trick.
Katie Keller,
Izzy Marsh and
Ainsley Thurston each registered two goals each while
Eva Greco,
Olivia Carner,
Katie Cronin and
Maddie McCorkle rounded out Duke's goals with one apiece.
Duke assisted on 14 of the 25 goals, led by Greco and
Caroline DeBellis with three dishes each.
Duke jumped out to a quick 9-2 lead after the first quarter as Barry and DeSimone combined for seven goals. The Phoenix reeled in two of their own early in the second quarter, but were held scoreless until 14:30 in the third. During that span, Duke went on a 6-0 run to extend its lead to 17-5 at the start of the third. The Phoenix were outscored 8-0 in the second half.
The Blue Devils got big minutes from its bench in the fourth quarter as Cronin and Thurston each tallied three points. Marsh tallied the first goal of her career with just over 10 minutes left to play before Cronin found her again as Duke led 24-5 with 2:29 remaining. Cronin registered her third point of the outing just before the clock expired.
The Blue Devils won the ground ball game 20-11 as graduate student
Katie Cosgrove recorded three ground balls and two caused turnovers. Also spearheading Duke's defense was
Cubby Biscardi and
Kay Conway with two ground balls each. Freshman
Reilly Traynor also got after it with two ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Senior
Sophia LeRose got the start between the pipes for Duke and recorded three saves. Freshman
Kennedy Everson and
Shaye Fitzpatrick also saw time in goal.
Duke outshot Elon 40-12 and was nearly perfect on clears (12-for-14).
Elon was led by Gillian Curran with two goals.
Duke will hit the road for two consecutive contests away from Koskinen Stadium. The Blue Devils will take on William & Mary Friday, Feb. 18 at 4 p.m., before a 1 p.m., contest against High Point on Feb. 20.
