DURHAM – Duke men's lacrosse graduate student
Nakeie Montgomery and sophomore
Brennan O'Neill have been named to the 2022 Tewaaraton Award Watch List the Tewaaraton Foundation announced Thursday evening.
The list of 51 includes the top players across all three divisions of NCAA lacrosse and highlight the early contenders for the 2022 Tewaaraton Award. O'Neill is one of two sophomores on the men's list, joining Virginia's Connor Shellenberger.
The Tewaaraton Award annually honors the top male and female college lacrosse player in the United States. The selection committees are made up of premier collegiate coaches and are appointed annually by The Tewaaraton Foundation.
"This is going to be such an exciting lacrosse season, and we're happy to be recognizing these talented student-athletes," said Jeffrey Harvey, chair of the Tewaaraton Foundation. "We wish everyone the best of luck as the spring gets underway."
A 2021 USILA All-America first team selection and preseason All-American this season, Montgomery returns for his final season to lead the Blue Devil midfield. The native of Dallas, Texas is picking up where he left off in 2021, registering three goals and an assist in Duke's first two games. He owns 61 goals and 49 assists for 110 career points in 62 career games.
O'Neill, Duke's top goal scorer from 2021, is off to a fast start in his second year as a Blue Devil. The native of Bay Shore, N.Y., registered six goals in the season-opening win over Robert Morris and finished the weekend with nine tallies to earn the ACC Offensive Player of the Week award. In 19 career games O'Neill has 54 goals and 10 assists for 64 points, leaving him just 26 away from the 100-point plateau as a sophomore.
The third-ranked Blue Devils are 2-0 and return to Koskinen Stadium for a weekend set against Manhattan and Jacksonville. Duke hosts the Jaspers, Feb. 11 at 3 p.m., on ACC Network and Jacksonville Feb. 13 at 1 p.m.
