DURHAM – The Duke men's lacrosse team came in at No. 3 in the preseason United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association preseason poll and three Blue Devils were voted to the organization's preseason All-America squads as selected by Division I head coaches.
The Blue Devils are the consensus No. 3 squad in the trio of preseason polls heading into the 2022 campaign. Individually,
Nakeie Montgomery garnered second-team preseason All-America honors, while
Brennan O'Neill and
Tyler Carpenter were voted to the third team.
Virginia sits atop the poll with 320 points, while Maryland is second with 303, including one first-place vote. North Carolina and Notre Dame round out the top five according to the coaches. Eight of Duke's regular season opponent are in the top 20 with three others received votes.
All three Blue Devils picked up their third preseason All-America nods after earning spots on the Inside Lacrosse and USA Lacrosse Magazine preseason squads. Georgetown landed six on the preseason All-America and Notre Dame had five selections.
Montgomery, a USILA first-team All-American in 2021, returns for his final season as a Blue Devil in 2022 with 58 goals and 48 assists to his name. He has been a part of the first midfield line for Duke for much of his career, starting 36 of his 60 games played. Possessing incredible vision on the field, the Dallas, Texas native dished a career-high 22 assists last season en route to being named to the All-ACC squad.
O'Neill looks to build on his fantastic rookie season in which he finished second on the team in scoring with 45 goals and 10 assists for 55 points and earned honorable mention All-America accolades. He scored at least one point in all 17 games and had nine hat tricks. Voted 2021 ACC Freshman of the Year by the league's coaches, O'Neill was lethal on extra man for the Blue Devils, scoring nine man-up goals. He ranked first among all freshmen nationally in goals per game (2.65) and was second in the ACC and 18th nationally in overall goals.
A USILA All-America third team pick as a sophomore, Carpenter looks to build on his breakout season. The Durham native played both long stick midfield and close defense a year ago and was crucial to Duke's success at the faceoff. He collected 72 ground balls and led the squad in caused turnovers with 23 takeaways. Carpenter also added two goals and an assist on offense. For his career, Carpenter has played in 25 games and owns 95 ground balls and 32 caused turnovers.
Duke opens the 2022 season this weekend, hosting Robert Morris, Feb. 4 at 5 p.m., at Koskinen Stadium. The Blue Devils welcome Vermont to Durham Feb. 6 at 1 p.m. Duke hosts six games overall in February and has 10 home contests overall.
