DURHAM -- USA Lacrosse has named the final 23-man roster that will represent the United States in the 2023 World Lacrosse Men's Championship in San Diego. Former Blue Devils
JT Giles-Harris and
Michael Sowers along with current junior
Brennan O'Neill will represent Duke on the team.
The reigning world champion, the United States will be the No. 1 seed for the 30-team event which runs June 21 through July 1. Duke head coach
John Danowski will serve as the head coach of the United States, looking to bring home another gold medal after doing so in 2018.
The roster was selected following a 50-player training camp in Florida, held in conjunction with the IMLCA Winter Summit, earlier this month. It was the fourth training opportunity head coach
John Danowski and his staff have had with the players since June.
"The character of these guys was beyond anything I could have imagined," said Danowski, who led the U.S. to the world championship in 2018 in Israel. "The way they tried to do the things we asked them to do, it was incredible. At every event they made it hard for us [to make the final roster decisions]. The meeting we had to make the selections was one of the most stressful things in my coaching career and the face-to-face meeting with the players was incredibly difficult. One of our assistant coaches was still shaking after the meeting. That's how profound the effect they had on us."
Giles-Harris is considered on the premier defensemen in the world. The 2022 PLL Defensive Player of the Year, he will make his debut for the US Men's National Team on the international stage this summer. A two-time All-America first-team pick while at Duke, Giles-Harris started 80 of his 81 games as a Blue Devil. He was named the nation's top defenseman in 2021 and the 2019 ACC Defensive Player of the Year. He holds the Duke career record for caused turnovers with 89.
Playing one year in Durham, Sowers left his mark on the Duke record books in 2021. A starter in all 17 games, the native of Dresher, Pa., led the team with 37 goals and 44 assists for 81 points. His 44 assists rank seventh and 81 points 12th in Duke single-season history. A USILA All-America first team pick in 2021, Sowers completed his collegiate career with 158 goals and 225 assists for 383 points. He finished his career ranked second in NCAA history in career points and tied for second in career assists. His 5.98 points per game rank fifth in NCAA Division I history, while his 3.52 assists per game are sixth.
O'Neill, the lone collegiate player on the roster, recently won gold with the United States at the 2022 World Lacrosse Men's U21 Championship over the summer. O'Neill finished the tournament with 18 goals, including two goals and an assist in the gold medal contest. He enters his junior season with the Blue Devils with 129 career points from 98 goals and 31 assists. He is on pace to become the fastest Blue Devil to 100 career goals, needing just two to reach the benchmark. A two-time All-ACC pick and a 2022 second-team All-American, O'Neill is one of four members of the 23-man squad who won gold with the U19/U21 program.
The entire roster, with the exception of O'Neill, played in the Premier Lacrosse League this past summer and 11 of the players are currently playing box in the National Lacrosse League.
The 23-man roster includes players that played for 15 different college programs, led by Maryland with five players and Denver and Duke with three each.
