DURHAM – Wake Forest scored with 1:07 left in the first half and held off a Blue Devil flurry of shots down the stretch to capture a 1-0 victory over Duke in the 2022 ACC Field Hockey quarterfinal. The eighth-ranked Demon Deacons advance to the semifinals Nov. 2.
Duke ends its season with a 7-11 overall record, while Wake Forest moves to 15-4 overall. The Demon Deacons have won nine of their past 10 contests.
How it Happened
- Duke came out on the front foot in the first quarter, having much of the possession in Wake Forest's defensive third. The Blue Devils fired the first shot of the contest, forcing Demon Deacon goaltender Ellie Todd to make a save. Duke also won the first penalty corner of the game at the 9:18 mark, but Charlie van Oirschot's shot was blocked by a Wake Forest back.
- Wake Forest took a 1-0 lead midway through the second quarter, but after a review it was disallowed to keep the teams knotted at zero.
- The Demon Deacons got on the board in the 29th minute, firing home a penalty corner. Meike Lanckohr's shot off the stop from Lee Ann Gordon was deflected by a Duke defender and into the cage for the 1-0 lead. It was Lanckohr's 10th of the season.
- Neither team created many chances in the first half with Wake Forest edging the Blue Devils 3-2 in shots. Piper Hampsch made one save in the first half.
- Needing an equalizer, Duke's offense gained steam in the fourth quarter. The Blue Devils weathered playing two players down after a pair of yellow cards early in the period and put a lot of pressure on the Demon Deacons down the stretch.
- The Blue Devils pulled Hampsch with just over four minutes to play to add an extra attacker on the field. Duke earned a pair of late penalty corners but was unable to capitalize as Wake Forest's corner defense stood tall.
- Duke held the narrow 7-6 advantage in shots and 5-4 in penalty corners. Duke's Hampsch and Wake Forest's Todd both finished with one save apiece.
Notes
- Hampsch pushed her career saves total to 207, ranked 10th on the Duke career list.
Quotes
Pam Bustin overall thoughts after the game
"I'm really proud of the performance today. We competed against a very experience Wake [Forest] team and we were head-to-head the entire game. An unfortunate deflection on a corner that put us behind, but we had opportunities to tie the game up or even go ahead."
On coming out strong to start the game
"The team has been really playing at a high level for a couple of weeks now. I think it was just a matter of having confidence in that and knowing that we would have to do that right away because there have been games where we're a little late to the party, but we didn't want that to be the case again."
On the penalty corners
"It was disappointing [to give up that late goal], but that's a part of hockey and that's a part of the game. We knew they were a very good penalty corner team. For us, that's just what we have to work on. We're missing some key pieces, which you saw Wake [Forest] had in their experience, especially No. 2 [Sky Caron] and No. 11 [Meike Lanckohr]. We've got to develop over the spring our level of danger in those positions."
