First Intrasquad Scrimmage Saturday
Duke will hold its first Blue vs. White intrasquad scrimmage Saturday afternoon at the Cohan Turf Fields on campus. The game, set for a 2 p.m., start is open to the public. Please be advised that nearby parking is unavailable for general public due to the Duke football game against North Carolina Saturday evening at Wallace Wade Stadium. The Blue Devils recently completed their second week of full fall ball practices.
Brennan O'Neill and
Dyson Williams will not be in attendance for the scrimmage as they take part in USA and Canada Lacrosse National Team evaluations.
Danowski Begins Final Evaluations for Team USA
Blue Devil head coach
John Danowski will not be in attendance for Duke's intrasquad affair Saturday. As head coach of the U.S. Men's National Team, he will be at USA Lacrosse headquarters for the USA Lacrosse Fall Classic. It will be the first of two final evaluations before Danowski and his staff selects the 23-man roster. Five Blue Devils are among the 52 players in attendance, including junior
Brennan O'Neill.
The 2023 World Lacrosse Championship is set for June 21-July 1 in San Diego, Calif. The United States is the reigning world champion after Tom Schreiber scored a last-second goal to lift the U.S. past Canada in the 2018 title game in Israel. Danowski's success on the international stage led USA Lacrosse to make an unprecedented decision in keeping Danowski at the helm for a second term. He is the first coach in the history of the U.S. men's program to serve more than one term.
A Brief Look at 2023 Blue Devils Roster
The Blue Devils return 37 players from last year's roster, including the top two scorers and the core of the defensive unit. Overall, Duke welcomes back 60 percent of the scoring from last year with attackmen
Brennan O'Neill and
Dyson Williams leading the way with 74 and 52 points, respectively.
Senior
Kenny Brower is back to anchor the close defense. Brower has started every game of his career and along with O'Neill,
Jake Caputo and
Jake Naso captured the gold medal at the U21 World Championship this summer. Sophomore
Andrew McAdorey looks to build on a strong rookie campaign in the midfield as the Blue Devils search to fill the holes left by
Nakeie Montgomery,
Sean Lulley and
Joe Robertson on offense.
Duke welcomes three graduate student transfers –
William Helm,
Thomas Schelling and
Jamie Zusi. Helm was an All-American goaltender at Saint Lawrence, while Schelling graduated from Lehigh ranked sixth in program history with 179 points. Zusi was an All-Ivy honorable mention pick as a faceoff specialist for Penn. He will bolster the faceoff unit of Naso and freshman
Luke Engelke. Eleven freshmen, five of which were Under Armour All-America games, joined the Duke family for the 2023 season.
John Danowski Coaching Tree Continues to Grow
A host of former Blue Devils climbed into the head coaching ranks over the summer.
Brad Ross took the reins from Mike Pressler as the head coach at Bryant University. Ross, who served as the associate head coach at Bryant from 2011-14, previously served as an assistant coach at Navy, Ohio State and Brown.
Justin Turri also made the jump to the head coaching ranks when St. John's announced the Duke All-American as the fourth head coach in the history of the men's lacrosse program. Turri previously spent four seasons as an assistant coach and offensive coordinator at Michigan. Justin also welcomed his brother,
Kyle Turri, as an assistant coach for the Red Storm.
Recapping the 2022 PLL Season for the Blue Devils
It was another successful season in the PLL for former Blue Devils. Highlighted by
JT Giles-Harris as the Dave Pietramala Defensive Player of the Year and
Michael Sowers the Most Valuable Player of the PLL Championship game after leading Waterdogs to the title, Duke had 11 players suit up for PLL teams.
Seven Blue Devils –
Michael Manley, Giles-Harris, Myles Jones, CJ Costabile, Brad Smith, Sowers and
Cade Van Raaphorst – were named All-Stars. Costabile and
Pat Resch helped lead Chaos back to the championship game before falling to Sowers and the Waterdogs.
Nakeie Montgomery and
Joe Robertson were the latest Blue Devils to make their professional debuts, suiting up for Redwoods.
