DURHAM – With the start of the 2022 fencing season just around the corner, head coach
Alex Beguinet and the program announced captains for the squad in seniors
Finn Hossfeld,
Terence Lee and
Zsofia Walter and junior
Christina Ferrari.
This group features individuals that have qualified for the NCAA Fencing Championship and have garnered ACC medals numerous times throughout their careers.
Hossfeld returns to the fencing strip for his senior year as one of the most successful Duke fencers in recent years. A two-time All-American foilist, Hossfeld has numerous accolades under his belt. During his sophomore season, he finished tied for third overall at the NCAA Championship to collect his first All-America honor as he was named ACC Fencer of the Year that included an individual gold-medal performance at ACCs. Most recently in 2022, he placed ninth at the NCAA Championship for his second All-America nod.
Lee was named ACC Fencer of the Year for saber in 2022 after collecting his first All-America accolade at the NCAA Championship. He posted the second-best finish in Duke men's program history at the NCAA Fencing Championship in March, just behind 1996 national champion Jeremy Kahn. In addition to his performance at NCAAs, he garnered bronze during the individual portion of the ACC Championship and placed seventh at the regional meet.
As the lone junior captain, Ferrari qualified for the NCAA Championship for the second time in her young career in 2022 and collected her second All-America honor with an 11th-place finish in women's foil. She captured bronze during the individual portion of the ACC Championship and placed fourth at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional. She played to an impressive 37-9 regular-season ledger and helped the women's foil squad to a 14-5 season record.
Walter has been a steady presence for the women's saber squad the last three years and looks to continue to lead on and off the fencing strip. She helped guide the women's squad to its first ACC team title in program history in 2021 and nearly secured an individual ACC medal as she finished fourth in the event. As a two-time NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional qualifier, she's also seen great success in the classroom.
Duke opens the 2022-23 slate Nov. 5-6 at the M. Garret Collegiate Open in State College, Pa.
