BLACKSBURG, Va. – A first place finish in the women's pentathlon by graduate student
Erin Marsh, and a record-breaking 3000-meter run from classmate
Nick Dahl highlighted the first day of competition for the Duke track & field at the Hokie Invitational.
Marsh secured the event's top placement for the second consecutive year with a total of 4,172 points. Her performance featured a first-place finish in the high jump (891 points), as her leap measured 1.73m (5-8 feet). Dahl shattered the 10-year-old Duke record in the 3000m and clocked the program's first sub-eight-minute time in the event, finishing in 7:59.84.
Isabel Wakefield finished second in the pentathlon and stood just 13 points off Marsh's total with 4,159 points, moving into third on Duke's all-time list. The senior took first place in the 60m hurdles and earned 1,068 points towards her total with an 8.27 second finish. Wakefield's time set a new PR and moved her into second all-time in program history. She also earned the top placement in the long jump with a height of six meters (19-8 ¼ feet) to collect 850 points.
Seeing their first competition of the indoor season, graduate students
Josh Romine and
CJ Ambrosio also had successful outings in the men's 3000m and contributed to re-writing the event's history in the Duke record book. Romine finished in 8:03.14 (3rd) to move into third all-time, while Ambrosio's time of 8:05.68 (5th) holds the No. 5 spot on Duke's list. Both marks were also personal bests.
Graduate student
Lauren Hoffman moved into second all-time on the 300m list and notched an event personal best after finishing in 38.45 seconds. Classmate
Alex Schwedt also moved into the No. 2 spot in the 300m with a PR of 34.07 seconds, while freshman
Mike Herzog improved on his No. 3 all-time triple jump mark for the second consecutive meet with a measurement of 14.65m (48-¾ feet).
The Blue Devils also received top-five placements from freshmen
Megan McGinnis,
Paige Sommers and
Chyler Turner. Sommers closed out the night with a win in the women's unseeded pole vault, tallying a height of 4.10m (13-5¼ feet). McGinnis took fifth in the 600m with a 1:31.63 finish, while Turner posted an 8.51 time in the 60m hurdles to also place fifth.
Freshman
Michael Bennett and sophomore
Gage Knight wrap up the men's heptathlon tomorrow morning with the 60m hurdles, pole vault and 1000-meter run remaining. Knight currently stands in fifth place with 3,022 points, which features a first-place finish in the 60m dash of 6.96 seconds. Bennett is currently 10th with 2,552 points.
