PHILADELPHIA - The Duke fencing team had a nearly undefeated showing Saturday at the Philadelphia Invitational. The 10th-ranked Duke men went 5-0 while the 12th-ranked women played to a 5-1 record at the Penn-hosted meet.Â
"This was a great meet for us," head coach Alex Beguinet said. "The men were undefeated for the day. They did start out fencing slow in the morning but quickly found their pace. We were able to fence all of the four fencers we brought in each discipline for both the men and women. Both teams seem to have found their stride and are coming together well as a competing team. We will have some much deserved rest after two long back to back weekends before we head up to MIT next weekend."
The Blue Devil men defeated No. 7 Penn (15-12), Johns Hopkins (17-10), Lafayette (24-3), NJIT (19-8) and NYU (18-9).Â
Saturday marks the second consecutive weekend the Duke men have defeated No. 7 Penn. After falling to the Quakers last weekend in one bout, the Blue Devil women bounced back and secured a 15-12 victory over the No. 10 Penn women this afternoon.Â
The Duke women also secured victories over Johns Hopkins (21-6), Lafayette (24-3), NJIT (17-10) and NYU (21-6). Their lone loss came to No. 2 Cornell (15-12).Â
The men's foil squad saw a flawless 5-0 performance and was led by junior Finn Hossfeld with an impressive 11-1 showing. The women's foil and saber teams also saw success on the fencing strips this afternoon with 5-1 records.Â
Senior saberist Alex Gorman led the entire team with 14 victories while junior saberist Anneke Zegers and sophomore foilist Christina Ferrari each brought in 13 wins. Catherine Flanagan (12) and Lulu Tang (11) rounded out Duke's double-digit performances. Much like teammate Hossfeld, junior saberist Terence Lee went nearly undefeated with an 8-1 record on the day.Â
Up next, the Blue Devils will travel to Cambridge, Mass., for the Eric Sollee Invitational, hosted by MIT.
