DURHAM – Head Coach
Megan Cooke Carcagno and the Duke rowing program are pleased to announce the signing of
Sophie Gower, who will compete for the Blue Devils in the 2022-23 season.
Gower, a native of Tsawwassen, British Columbia, currently attends South Delta Secondary School while competing for the Thunder Rowing Club. She was a member of the Canadian Junior National Team this past year, helping the junior women's four place seventh at the 2021 World Rowing Junior Championships. Gower was also designated by Rowing Canada Aviron as a NextGen Hub athlete, a high performance program designed to train rowers to compete for their country at the highest levels of the sport.
Gower currently serves as a student council co-president at South Delta, where she was a member of the honor roll and principal's list from grades 8-11. She is the daughter of Stephen and Julie Gower.
Why did you choose to row at Duke?
SG: I chose Duke because of the constant strive for more, the amazing academic opportunities and the culture with the team and the coaches.
How did you get started in rowing?
SG: My mom rowed in university and decided that I had to give it a try my summer before high school.
What impact do you plan to make in your Duke rowing career?
SG: I want to arrive at Duke ready to push my teammates and ready to be pushed by my teammates to help Duke rise through the ranks.
What stuck out to you about the team that made the decision to attend Duke feel right?
SG: How ambitious and driven each and every athlete is, and how bonded and tightly knit the team is. The team made us feel very welcome in a place where we would be supported.
