STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - The Duke fencing team opened its 2022 slate Sunday with four team victories at the Penn State Duals in State College, Pa.
The 10th-ranked men went 3-1 on the day, highlighted by victories over higher-ranked foes No. 5 Penn State (16-11) and No. 7 Penn (16-11). The Blue Devil men also defeated Haverford (20-7) and dropped a 17-10 decision to No. 2 Columbia.
The 12th-ranked women secured a 26-1 victory over Haverford, but fell to No.2 Columbia (18-9), No. 7 Penn State (14-13), No. 8 Temple (14-13) and No. 10 Penn (15-12).
"We're happy to be back in a more normal competition schedule after last year's shortened schedule," head coach Alex Beguinet said. "Today's competition was pretty strong. The men went 3-1, losing only to Columbia and beating Penn, Penn State and Haverford. The women finished 1-4 with two very close matches, losing by only one bout against both Penn State and Temple. The freshmen integrated into the team very quickly with the upperclassmen to show them the ropes. We look forward to next weekend at Penn."
The men's saber squad saw a flawless 4-0 showing and was led by rookie Lukas Dannull and junior Terence Lee with seven victories each. The men's foil contingent finished the day 3-1 with help from Sam Gruber and Finn Hossfeld as they added six victories apiece.
Foilist Christina Ferrari and saberist Anneke Zegers recorded 10 wins each to lead all Blue Devils while saberist Alex Gorman added nine.
Sunday also marked the first collegiate meet for several Blue Devils. Vivi Buchmann (saber) and Catherine Flanagan (foil) saw success donning the Duke lamé with eight wins.
Full results from today's meet can be found below.
Duke will return to the state of Pennsylvania and turn its attention to the Philadelphia Invitational on Jan. 22.
