DURHAM – The Duke swimming and diving team fell to No. 2/5 NC State at Willis R. Casey Aquatic Center on Saturday.
The Duke women dropped the meet 126-174 to the fifth-ranked Wolfpack while the men came up short to No. 2 NC State, 112-177.
"We opened up and were a little sluggish this morning, we had a conversation about swimming with desire and making sure you are thinking about the last 25 and 50," Duke head coach
Dan Colella said. "I feel like our back half of the session this morning was significantly better. Some great performances. There were swims across the board that were very impressive, and I think it is setting us up for the end of season championships."
The women's diving squad were strong in the meet, taking the top four spots in the one-meter competition. Freshman
Margo O'Meara led the way with a score of 325.35, followed by senior
Maddi Pullinger (295.43), junior
Kate Mullin (268.50) and junior
Ali Watson (266.55), respectively. In the three-meter competition, O'Meara took the top spot with a score of 340.65. Pullinger placed third in the event, recording a 283.43.
Junior
Sarah Foley was strong in the pair of individual events she competed in, placing first in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:12.82 and second in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:02.51.
Rookie
McKenna Smith and senior
Shayna Hollander teamed up to place second and third in the 100 freestyle. Smith recorded a time of 50.56 and Hollander touched in 51.83. Hollander also placed third in the 100 backstroke with a time of 55.44.
Freshman
Yixuan Chang recorded a pair of first-place finishes to lead the Blue Devils in the meet. She touched first in the women's 500 freestyle with a time of 4:53.64 and won the 200 individual medley in 2:02.08. Chang also placed second in the 200 freestyle (1:49.94), and was followed by Smith, who placed third in 1:51.59.
Sophomore
Aleyna Ozkan recorded a 55.30 in the 100 butterfly for second place, before senior
Cabell Whitlow finished third with a time of 55.55. Whitlow was also Duke's top finisher in the 200 butterfly, touching second in 1:59.89, and followed Chang in the 200 individual medley as she placed third in 2:03.89.
In the relays, Duke opened the meet placing second in the women's 400 medley relay. The quartet of senior
Easop Lee, Foley, freshman
KyAnh Truong and Chang recorded a mark of 3:41.44. The Blue Devils concluded the meet with a second-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay as Truong, Foley, Hollander and Smith touched in 1:32.37.
On the men's side, freshman
Michael Jiang recorded one of Duke's first-place finishes on the afternoon as he recorded a mark of 1:49.79 in the 200 individual medley. Sophomore
Brendan Driscoll placed first in the 500 freestyle (4:33.88) and junior
Charlie Gingrich recorded a first-place finish in the 100 butterfly (48.97).
Junior
Matthew Whelan placed second in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:49.15. Senior
Cole Reznick placed third in the 100 breaststroke (55.87) and second in the 200 individual medley (1:50.74). Senior
David Hallaron placed third in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:39.57.
In diving,
Harel Anolick recorded a 344.03 lead the Blue Devils in the three-meter competition as the Blue Devils took second through fifth. Anolick was followed by sophomore
Seamus Harding Jr. in third (336.23), rookie
Will McCollum in fourth (320.55) and junior
Jonah Cagley in fifth (309.68). McCollum led the way for Duke in the one-meter event, placing second with a score of 317.48.

Coleman Kredich placed third in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:17.18 to open the meet. Duke concluded the meet with a first-place finish (1:21.35) in the 200 freestyle relay behind junior
Brad Sanford, junior
Coleman Kredich, Gingrich and Whelan.
The Blue Devils also swam an exhibition meet against the Wolfpack on Friday evening. Although team scores were not kept, Foley shined in the meet. The Philadelphia, Pa., native swam a school-record time of 4:08.97 in the 400 individual medley and tied for the second-fastest time in program history in the 200 freestyle (1:45.94).
Also in the exhibition, Jiang etched his name in the program record books, moving to sixth all-time in the 400 individual medley with a time of 3:54.13.
"Last night was an opportunity that was unexpected," Colella said. "We had some great performances. Having an evening session like that and coming back the next morning is our last opportunities to get a dress rehearsal for ACCs, like finals to preliminaries."
Duke returns to action on Friday, Jan. 28 as the Blue Devils host North Carolina for Senior Day at Taishoff Aquatics Pavilion. The meet is set to begin at 4 p.m.
