DURHAM β Duke University's Darcy Bourne has been invited to train with the Great Britain Women's Field Hockey team as the squad begins training for the 2024 Olympics in Paris. Bourne is one of eight new players selected to participate.
Bourne spent this past fall back home in England training with the U21 National Team in hopes of being selected to participate in the Junior Women's World Cup in South Africa. The 2020 ACC Field Hockey Freshman of the Year earned an official spot on the England U21 roster in November, but the Junior Women's World Cup set to be played in December was postponed due to the latest variant of COVID-19.
"Darcy, Lily, Alex, Sophie and Liv all really excelled through the recent England U21 programme and I hope that this opportunity makes up for their disappointment in the postponement for the recent Junior World Cup in December," said head coach David Ralph.
"It was great to welcome them to the squad on Monday and see them in action with everyone on the pitch. The freshness and excitement that new players bring to the squad is very important and I have no doubt that they will help improve the standard and quality of our training environment. A massive congratulations to all of them and, while we hope that this is just the start of another exciting chapter in their careers, I think all of them deserve recognition for achieving selection to the squad," Ralph said.
Bourne and the others were invited to train with the team after impressing during the Talent Confirmation period, which involved camps at Bisham, World Cup qualification tournaments and junior international activity.
In her single season with the Blue Devils in 2019, Bourne started all 16 games and led the team in scoring with eight goals and one assist for 17 points. She garnered the top freshman award and was voted All-ACC first team for her efforts.

Prior to joining the Blue Devils in 2020, Bourne was a member of the U16, U18 and U21 England National Teams. She captained the U16 squad and led her high school to a national title both indoor and outdoor. She went on to earn a bronze medal at the European Championship as a sophomore and a bronze medal at Six Nations her junior season. Before arriving in Durham, she totaled 54 junior international caps.
Β
The Talent Confirmation process is still ongoing with the squad, with athletes being given further opportunities to stake their claim for a place in the women's program across the next few weeks before the final squad is determined.Β

There will be seven two-legged qualifiers to determine the teams for the Olympics in Paris. The games will be held in home and away format as voted on by the International Hockey Federation (FIH). The highest seeds are placed in one group and drawn against a lower-ranked nation from the second pot.
