Duke Opens the Season at Penn State Duals

DURHAM – The Duke fencing team is set to kick off the 2022 season Sunday at the Penn State Duals in State College, Pa. The Blue Devils are slated to compete against six teams at the White Building on Penn State's campus.
On Sunday, the men's squad will face No. 2 Columbia, Haverford, No. 7 Penn, No. 5 Penn State and No. 10 Yale. The women are slated for No. 2 Columbia, Haverford, No. 10 Penn, No. 7 Penn State, Yale and No. 8 Temple. The event will run from 8:30am until 6pm.
Head coach Alex Beguinet's program enters the year ranked on both sides. The men check in at No. 10 in the nation while the women are tabbed No. 12. The Blue Devils are coming off a highly successful 2021 season and look to carry that momentum into the New Year.
The women's foil squad is led by captain Zoe Superville, freshman Catherine Flanagan and sophomores Christina Ferrari and Lulu Tang. On the men's side, 2021 All-American Finn Hossfeld looks to build on his successful sophomore campaign and will be joined by junior Sam Gruber, sophomore David Tierney and rookie Cam Evans.
Three veterans make up the women's saber squad in senior Alex Gorman and juniors Zsofia Walter and Anneke Zegers in addition to freshman Vivi Buchmann. Stephen Kim headlines the men's team while Terence Lee returns to compete for Duke in two years. Alan Chen and Lukas Dannull are also set to compete.
Much like the women's saber team, women's epee is spearheaded by returners Huda Aldadah, Chloe Beittel and Sarah Lurye and joined by newcomer Rachel Kowalsky. Danny Campbell III and Kevin Chao look to lead on the men's side along with freshmen Ethan Nguyen and Allen Marakov.
Following this weekend's competition, Duke will return to the state of Pennsylvania and turn its attention to the Philadelphia Invitational on Jan. 22.
