VERONA, N.Y. – Paced by a top-10 finish from freshman
Luke Sample, the Duke men's golf team opened its 2021-22 season with a fourth-place finish at the Turning Stone Tiger Intercollegiate on Monday at the Kaluyhat Golf Club in Verona, N.Y.
Duke posted a 6-over 294 on Monday and secured fourth place in the 15-team with its 54-hole score of 5-over 869 (290-285-294). Host Missouri won the tournament at 17-under par, followed by LSU (-15), Penn State (even), Duke (+5) and Delaware (+22) to round out the top five.
Sample played steady golf in Monday's final round, posting an even-par 72 to finish the tournament at 2-under 214 and in a tie for ninth place. After opening with a pair of bogeys over his first five holes, Sample played 2-under over his finishing stretch with birdies on the par-4 10th (his seventh of the day) and the par-4 14th (his 11th).
"It was really exciting to finally put on the Duke gear this week, and it felt great to talk through strategy with coaches," said Sample. "I definitely feel like I learned a lot this week, but I was striking the ball very well. I left some shots out there, but I'm happy with the way I stuck with it. We can't wait to get back at it this week in Durham to build on this finish."
Sample was the only freshman in the field to finish inside the top 10. Missouri's Jack Parker and LSU's Michael Sanders were co-medalists, each finishing the tournament at 9-under 207.
Freshman teammate
Kelly Chinn also recorded a top-20 finish as he placed 17th in his Duke debut at 1-over 217. He carded a 75 on Monday, after rounds of 73 and 69 on Sunday.
Sophomore
Jimmy Zheng made a Monday charge thanks to his 2-under 70 in the final round and posted a tie for 22nd finish at 5-over 221. After a rocky start, Zheng played 4-under golf over the final 43 holes of the tournament.
Playing individually, graduate student
Qi wen Wong was also impressive over his final two rounds, which included a 3-under 69 on Monday that was highlighted by six birdies. He finished tied for 22nd at 5-over 221 with rounds of 81, 71 and 69.
