DURHAM – Ninth-ranked Maryland scored a pair of goals in the first eight minutes to hand the 12th-ranked Blue Devils a 4-0 setback to close out the ACC/Big Cup this weekend on Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium.
Duke graduate student transfer goalkeeper
Grace Brightbill made her Duke debut, starting the second half in the cage for the Blue Devils. Brightbill made four saves in the 30 minutes of action, including on a couple of rockets from penalty corners.
Maryland (2-1) came out with high pressure against the Blue Devils and capitalized early to put Duke (1-3) on its heels. The Terrapins took advantage of a couple Duke defensive breakdowns for the 2-0 advantage.
"I'm disappointed in a few things, absolutely the score and the outcome, but more importantly just not really executing and locking in on the things we've been working on," said head coach
Pam Bustin. "Not only throughout the week and the season, but also since Friday. But I think we recognize it and it's a work in progress. We're going to continue to grow and push and challenge our maturity and challenge ourselves on a daily basis. I'm very excited about moving forward."
Bibi Donraadt was the scorer for both tallies, tapping in a cross from Riley Donnelly on the right side in the fourth minute and then redirecting a shot by Kyler Greenwalt four minutes later.
The Blue Devils settled in a bit in the second quarter, but again couldn't find consistent possession in the offensive third. Defensively, Duke held Maryland to just three shots in the second stanza, compared to the six in the first quarter.
"I think the kids worked super hard physically," Bustin said. "One of the amazing things is that we made a lot of lineup changes and I'm very, very pleased with the kids who came off the bench to help the players that were on there, to give them a break or to even bring the level of play up where it needed to be. That's really promising. This is going to be a very deep and strong team as we get more experience."
The Terrapins, however, extended the lead to 3-0 with 3:35 left until halftime as Hope Rose found herself wide open inside the circle and beat Duke goalkeeper
Piper Hampsch.
Duke made some adjustments during the halftime break and came out much stronger in the third quarter. The Blue Devils worked their way into the circle, generating two penalty corners and three shots during the period.
However, solid defense from the Terrapins kept Duke from getting clear looks at the cage as Maryland's defense blocked almost everything the Blue Devils sent their way.
Maryland capped the scoring late in the third period when Margot Lawn fed a wide-open Julianna Tornetta for the 4-0 lead.
Maryland held a 17-4 advantage in shots and an 8-2 edge in penalty corners. Hampsch finished with three saves in the first half. Noelle Frost for Maryland did not make any saves in the cage.
Duke hits the road for the first time next weekend when it travels to take on Princeton, Sept. 11 at 1 p.m. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
