DURHAM – Coming off a win at second-ranked North Carolina on Friday night, the Duke women's soccer team has moved up to No. 2 in the United Soccer Coaches national poll released Tuesday.
The Blue Devils have shot out to a 7-0-0 start this season, marking the second-most wins to kick off a campaign in program history (2000, eight wins). Duke began at No. 6 in the United Soccer Coaches preseason rankings in August before steadily climbing to No. 2 this week, marking the Blue Devils' highest ranking since Oct. 31, 2017.
Duke's impressive first half of the 2021 regular season is even more notable given the quality of the team's opponents. The Blue Devils opened non-conference play with consecutive matches against ranked teams, as they defeated then-No. 13 Arkansas on Aug. 19 before holding off No. 19 Washington on Aug. 22. Following a road victory at preseason No. 18 Vanderbilt on Aug. 29, Duke returned home and earned a marquee win in a top-10 battle against No. 10 Stanford on Sept. 2.
The 1-0 win at No. 2 North Carolina on Sept. 17 was Duke's first over its rivals since 2015 and the fifth win in program history against an opponent ranked in the top two of the United Soccer Coaches poll.
In the NCAA's Rating Percentage Index (RPI), which is designed to rank teams based on their strength of schedule, Duke is currently rated as the No. 1 team in the nation. The Blue Devils also advanced to No. 3 in the most recent TopDrawerSoccer.com rankings after beginning the season at No. 7.
The Blue Devils follow up their victory in Friday's ACC opener with another top-10 road test on Thursday, Sept. 23, when Duke heads to No. 7 Virginia for a 7 p.m. kickoff. The match will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra, which can be accessed via WatchESPN.com and the ESPN app.
