Former Blue Devils Battle for PLL Crown
At least two former Blue Devils will capture a Premier Lacrosse League title this weekend when Chaos and Whipsnakes meet in the championship game for the second consecutive season. The Whipsnakes are the lone champion in the history of the PLL, capturing the first two crowns, including a 12-6 triumph last year.
Duke will be represented on both squads with
CJ Costabile and
Pat Resch suiting up for Chaos and
Brad Smith and
Justin Guterding donning the Whipsnakes jersey. Costabile is looking for a third championship ring after scoring the winning goal to give Duke its first NCAA Championship and then helping lead the Chesapeake Bayhawks to the Major League Lacrosse Championship in 2019.
Smith looks to repeat with the Whipsnakes after helping the squad to a second championship after he missed the 2019 PLL season to injury. Guterding is in search of his first ring after the Blue Devils came up just short in the 2018 NCAA Championship game. He was picked up by Whipsnakes in a deal with two games left in the regular season and has been just what the team needed to help regain its winning ways. In his four games with Whipsnakes, Guterding has six points.
In the semifinals, Costabile was a force offensively and defensively for Chaos. He helped hold Atlas to just nine goals, registering two ground balls and a caused turnover and scored a two-pointer and a transition goal to spark the Chaos offense. Costabile first played with Chaos July 3 and has played every game since, racking up eight points, 15 ground balls and six caused turnovers in eight games.
Smith was stellar for Whipsnakes, scoring twice and assisting on two others to finish the day with four points. With seven points in the two postseason games, Smith's presence in the midfield has been crucial to the team's run to the final game.
Four Blue Devils on Fall Classic USA Roster
For the first time since January 2020 Duke and U.S. men's national team head coach
John Danowski will get the U.S. team together as he takes the next step to building the roster for the 2023 World Lacrosse Men's World Championship. Danowski led Team USA to the 2018 crown in thrilling fashion.
The Blue Devil family will be well represented as four former players are among the 33 players selected by Danowski and his coaching staff. Heading to Maryland for a pair of contests are
JT Giles-Harris, Myles Jones, Brad Smith and
Cade Van Raaphorst. The United States will take on Canada Oct. 15 in a rematch of the 2018 title game and will play 2021 NCAA Champion Virginia Oct. 16.
"We're excited to get the coaching staff back together and see some new guys and get a feel for their personalities," Danowski said. "We've got a sprinkling of guys from the 2018 team and we're looking to them to show the culture that we've established. It's important for us to carry that momentum forward."
Duke No. 2 in USA Lacrosse Magazine Early Top 25
USA Lacrosse Magazine recently unveiled is very early top 25 and tabbed Blue Devils the No. 2 team in the country. NCAA runner up Maryland nabbed the top spot, while Virginia, North Carolina and Georgetown round out the top five.
The Blue Devils return 66 percent of their scoring from a year ago, including five of the top five point scorers. Defensively, Duke will be without Giles-Harris for the first time in five seasons, but maintains the core of its group from a year ago.
