Hampsch Named ACC Defensive Player of the Week

DURHAM, N.C.βDuke sophomore goalkeeper Piper Hampsch has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Field Hockey Defensive Player of the Week. This is the first weekly award in her young career.
In the Blue Devils' first road game of the season, Hampsch came up big with a season-high nine saves, including four in a wild fourth quarter, to help lead Duke to a 3-1 victory at No. 13 Princeton.
The second-year starter in goal kept the Tigers at bay in the first quarter, making three stops and keeping Princeton off the board despite its three penalty corners. Hampsch shined in the fourth quarter, making four saves as Princeton attacked relentlessly in search of the equalizer.

Overall, Hampsch anchored Duke's defense to keep the Tigers' penalty corner in check, stopping Princeton from scoring on 10 penalty corners. The native of Hopedale, Massachusetts currently leads the ACC in saves per game at 5.80, two more than the next closest netminder.

The Blue Devils moved to No. 17 in the national rankings following the win at Princeton. Duke returns home to host No. 15 Wake Forest Friday at 4 p.m., before traveling to James Madison Sunday for a 1 p.m., contest. Β
