DURHAM – Duke field hockey and head coach
Pam Bustin are thrilled to welcome
Sammi Steele back to the program, serving as the volunteer assistant for the 2021 campaign.
"It's an exciting day for Duke field hockey as we have the incredible opportunity to welcome a forever Blue Devil back to campus in Sammi Steele," said Bustin. "Since graduation, Sammi has remained closed to the program, helping with video and coding throughout last season. When the volunteer assistant position became available, it was clear to me that Sammi was the very top choice. Her incredible playing experience and knowledge of our defensive principles will undoubtedly aid in the strength and growth of our backfield. Her attention to goalkeeping detail and ability to train with our three motivated goalkeepers should keep each sharp and ready to play. Sammi's love and commitment to the Duke field hockey program are welcomed forces of energy to our intense training and competition schedule."
Steele, who graduated in 2020, was a veteran goalkeeper for the Blue Devils from 2016 to 2019. She started all 84 contests of her career, finishing with a 62-22 record and 25 shutouts. Steele ranks third in Duke history in career goals against average (1.32), fifth in saves (269) and 15th in save percentage (.706).
"I'm super excited to rejoin the team as a coach this time!" said Steele. "Knowing the team culture will be a definite advantage for me to be able to jump right into the role. I can't wait to be back and helping the program in a new way and I'm so excited to see what this season has in store!"
She was a three-time NFHCA All-Region First Team selection and earned All-ACC honors on three occasions, including first team in 2019. Steele was named the NFHCA National Defensive Player of the Week three times and was a four-time ACC Defensive Player of the Week honoree. A model student-athlete, Steele was a five-time member of the ACC Honor Roll while being named to the All-ACC Academic Team and NFHCA National Academic Squad four times.
Steele graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Visual Arts in 2019 before earning her Master of Management in 2020. Since receiving her degrees, Steele has worked at Rewriting the Code in Durham.
