DURHAM – Following a successful undefeated opening weekend, the Duke volleyball team returns to action Tuesday to kick off the 2021 home slate. The Blue Devils (2-0) will welcome Elon (1-2) for a 6:30 p.m., match in Cameron Indoor Stadium. The contest will be broadcast on ACCNX and it will also be Back to School Night for Blue Devil fans.
LAST TIME OUT
Duke went 2-0 in its opening weekend at the Coastal Carolina Invitational by defeating the host Chanticleers (3-2) and Iowa (3-2). The Blue Devils are hitting .209 percent in their first two matches as junior
Lizzie Fleming is hitting an impressive .429 with just two errors in both matches.
In both weekend matches, the Blue Devils got off to a rocky start but looked to their leaders to help find their rhythm offensively and defensively.
A CLOSER LOOK AT THE SERIES
Duke is 11-7 all-time against Elon and head coach
Jolene Nagel is 2-0. The two squads haven't met since 2012 despite their close proximity. In their last meeting in Cameron Indoor Stadium on Sept. 7, 2012, Duke secured a quick 3-0 sweep.
SCOUTING THE PHOENIX
The Phoenix opened the 2021 season at the Virginia Tech Invitational where they faced the host Hokies, Lehigh and Toledo. Head coach Mary Tendler's squad dropped 3-0 and 3-1 decisions to Toledo and Virginia Tech, respectively, and defeated Lehigh (3-1). Last season, the Phoenix went 5-5 overall in the condensed COVID-19 schedule.
After three matches, Elon is led by Leah Daniel with 47 kills as the Phoenix are hitting .222 percent. Setter Haylie Clark is averaging 8.91 assists/set while Jenn Krzeminski has 12.0 total blocks to her name. Daniel was also named CAA Preseason Player of the Year.
BACK IN ACTION
Nagel returns nearly all of her offense from the 2020-21 season, led by
Ade Owokoniran (243 kills),
Gracie Johnson (223 kills) and
Payton Schwantz (160 kills).
Duke's defense is also set up to be successful this season, spearheaded by 2021 All-ACC libero
Mackenzie Cole with 396 digs. The Blue Devils return both setters in
Camille Nazor and
Alex Springate and their top blockers are back in action in
Lily Cooper,
Lizzie Fleming and
Georgia Stavrinides.
FLEMING STAYS CONSISTENT

SPRINGATE SETS IT UP
