Practice Makes Perfect
- The Blue Devils enter the regular season following a successful record of 2-1-1 in the preseason.
- Six different players combined for eight goals, as the Blue Devils outscored their opponents 8-6 overall.
- Headlining the stretch was a 2-0 shutout of No. 24 High Point on Aug. 17. Sophomores Thorleifur Ulfarsson and Miguel Ramirez scored, while goalies Eliot Hamill, JT Harms and Grant Farley combined for a shutout.
Tale of the Tape
- The Flames have shown rapid improvement under third year head coach Kelly Findley, going 7-3-2 last season, after a 5-13-0 record in his first season.
- The Flames have had some recent success against ACC opponents, with two straight wins against North Carolina, after beating the Tar Heels 1-0 in the 2020 regular season, as well as 1-0 in this year's preseason.
Opponent History
- The Blue Devils are 2-0-0 against the Flames all-time, with the last meeting coming on Aug. 30, 2003.
- The Blue Devils have never allowed a goal against the Flames in a regular season game, outscoring them 7-0 over their previous two meetings.
What to Watch For
- Head Coach John Kerr will match up with a familiar face as the Blue Devils welcome Liberty Head Coach Kelly Findley. Findley was the head coach at ACC foe NC State for six seasons, where the Blue Devils went 5-0-1 against the Wolfpack between 2011-2016.
- Kerr enters his 14th season at the helm of the program. Kerr has compiled a career record of 203-155-45 and 122-96-32 at Duke.
- Duke has had at least one All-ACC honoree in every season since 1976, including every year of Kerr's tenure.
- The Blue Devils are returning all four representatives of last season's ACC-leading group on the All-ACC Freshman Team. Ulfarsson, Antino Lopez, Lewis McGarvey and Peter Stroud are looking to take another step forward in their sophomore campaigns.
- Stroud is also the program's lone representative on the 2021 ACC Preseason Watch List. The Chester, N.J., native was named to the All-ACC Third Team last season and will look to build on his successful opener.
- Ulfarsson led all Blue Devils with four points in the preseason, including points in the first three games. Freshman Ruben Mesalles tied Ulfarsson for the goal scoring lead at the end of the preseason with two and will look to continue his quick start.
- Mesalles and five other freshmen; Felix Barajas, Jai Bean, Sebastian Docters, Grant Farley and Shakur Mohammed will officially don the blue and white for the first time this weekend.
- Senior Ian Murphy is set to play in his 50th game as a Blue Devil on Friday. The defender has played over 4,000 minutes, scored four goals and added five assists for 13 points over his Blue Devil career.
