HIGH POINT, N.C. – Duke men's soccer closed out a three-game road swing with its second consecutive exhibition game victory Tuesday night, following a 2-0 win at No. 24 High Point at Vert Stadium.
Â
Sophomores
Miguel Ramirez and
Thorleifur Ulfarsson scored for the Blue Devils, while goalies
Grant Farley, Eliot Hamill and
JT Harms combined to make four saves and pitch the first shutout of the season.
Â
In a back-and-forth opening 10 minutes, it was High Point that registered the game's first strong scoring chance. MD Myers gained some space on the right-hand side of the box for the Panthers and fired a shot that forced freshman goalie Farley to make a key save in the ninth minute.
Â
After making two saves during his time on the field, Farley was replaced by Hamill, who was immediately tested. High Point's Aldair Cortes broke free and attempted to find the top right corner, but Hamill adjusted to make the difficult save.
Â
Duke got its first chance of the day, when
Conor Kelly attempted a clever volley in the 38th minute, missing just wide left. A few minutes later, Ramirez converted on a High Point miscue along the back line. The Lawrenceville, Ga., native sped past the standstill defense and delivered a low shot past the sliding High Point goaltender and into the back left corner of the net to give the Blue Devils a 1-0 lead.
Â
In the second half, the Panthers earned the first high profile scoring chance in the 55th minute, when Caco Fernandez got some space and ripped a laser of a shot toward the left side of the net, but Hamill turned it aside. The rebound fell to Davis Biggerstaff who missed a volley high, as the Blue Devils avoided potential damage. Duke was able to generate a brilliant scoring chance of its own in the 58th minute, but
Antino Lopez's header missed left.
Â
After a High Point scoring chance hit the crossbar in the 70th minute, Duke was able to clamp down and extend its lead when Ulfarsson got free off a strong pass from
Peter Stroud. Ulfarsson used his speed to power by the Panthers defense and delivered a low shot into the back left corner of the net to ultimately put the game away.
Â
The Blue Devils will return home to wrap up their exhibition slate when they welcome ACC foe N.C. State on Friday at 7 p.m. at Koskinen Stadium. The Blue Devils regular season opener is scheduled for Friday, Aug. 27 against Liberty at Koskinen Stadium at 7:30 p.m.
