DURHAM, N.C. – Duke track & field graduate
Brittany Aveni has become the first Blue Devil since 2019 to be named a First Team Academic All-American, as the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced on Thursday.
Aveni's honor makes her the first Blue Devil to be named to the first team since men's soccer's Daniele Proch in 2019. She also becomes the first representative of Duke track & field to be named to any team since
Juliet Bottorff in 2014. Aveni joins women's soccer's Delaney Graham (Second Team) and men's fencing's Finn Hossfeld (Third Team) as Duke honorees from this season.
Since alumni
Craig Henderson became the first to be named to the men's at-large second team in 1983, only five other men or women have been named to the first team, as Aveni joins
Brent Warner (2004),
Shannon Rowbury (2007),
Curtis Beach (2012) and Bottorff (2013 & 2014).
The Geneva, Ohio native recorded a season for the record books, setting outdoor program records in the 100m, 200m, 400m, 4x100m and 4x400m. Aveni carried her regular season success into the postseason, becoming the ACC Champion in the 400m and 4x400m, winning a bronze medal in the 200m and leading the women's team to its first ACC Outdoor Championship title.
Her season only improved in NCAA action, as Aveni qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 400m, 4x100m and 4x400m, becoming the program's first to qualify for three events at one championship and setting the record for events qualified for in her tenure with five. Aveni became a First Team All-American in the 4x400m relay, finishing seventh overall, while registering Second Team All-American accolades in the 400m and 4x100m with ninth and 11th place finishes respectively.
Aveni was one of only six women from the ACC to be named to the 2020-21 CoSIDA Academic All-American teams and is one of two ACC representatives on the first team, joining NC State's Kelsey Chimiel.
